Stockholm AP Saint John Perse Alexis Leger a French poet and former diplomat aged 73 won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The White House refused to release a USIA field paper that Democrats say mirrors U S prestige decline abroad. Secretary Herter and USIA director Allen say the document is a classified internal staff paper not to be made public outside the executive branch. Kennedy calls for disclosure, Nixon has no objection. The report’s exact nature remains officially undisclosed.
Local 1097 led by Bernard Steed plans to request concrete support from sister Local 371 in Front Royal as workers at Schwarzenbach Huber silk mill strike over a 9 percent wage demand. Nathaniel Hudson 47 pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the Sept 25 fatal shooting of Julian Lee Jones at a fruit growers labor camp. The case stemmed from a card game argument. Hudson was arraigned in Winchester Corporation Court. Jones, from Leesburg Florida, was wounded in the head about 1 am. Hudson fled but was captured later that day. a .32 caliber pistol was found on him.
The Waynesboro News Virginian, historically supporting Adlai Stevenson, editorially endorses the Nixon Lodge ticket. It argues Nixon would restrain federal power from intruding on local sovereignty and seeks peace without surrender, promising dignified conduct for universal welfare. David Greenglass, the confessed atomic spy and chief government witness in the 1951 Rosenberg trial, is due for release November 16 after completing the minimum 15 year sentence with good behavior credits. He serves in Lewisburg federal prison in Pennsylvania. The Rosenbergs were executed in 1953 for atomic spying. Mrs. Rosenberg was his sister.
United Nations ordered Col. Mobutu to withdraw his unruly soldiers from Leopoldville after a four day rampage. U.N. Rajeshwar Dayal and staff report soldiers beat and terrorized civilians. Mobutu agreed to pull troops to barracks by Thursday amid Belgian officers’ behind the scenes influence.
President Eisenhower plans a Staunton trip to visit Ida Stover Eisenhower birthplace at Old Stove Farm near Ft. Defiance. He will arrive at Shenandoah Valley Airport about 11 30 a.m. review a National Guard honor guard under Col. M B Clowe Jr and proceed by motorcade through Staunton to the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Mary Baldwin College for a 12 30 p.m address before a luncheon at King Auditorium.
