London reports Britain pressing a late compromise to salvage the 27 nation nonintervention pact over Spain as Eden works to align Soviet Russia with Britain against Italy and Germany. Fresh Mediterranean incidents prompt French action and renewed efforts to keep the sub committee alive amid key disputes on foreign troops and belligerent rights.

Boston Oct 26 Assistant Secretary of Navy Charles Edison said the Navy Department will ask Congress for funds to build two additional 60 million dollar battleships. Two such ships are already under construction marking the first postwar vessels for the nation. Edison also announced plans to build two fast experimental torpedo boats with 50 mph speed to launch torpedoes from fore and aft tubes.
A large truckload of furniture and household effects burned early this afternoon on Valley Pike in front of William M Stickley’s home at Vaucluse. The belongings reportedly belonged to Mrs. Shacklett of Strasburg who was moving to the city. Several men on the truck suffered burn injuries while removing goods from the fire. The origin is undetermined though gasoline fumes from recently cleaned clothes may have been ignited by a spark from the truck motor. The truck was badly damaged.
Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese forces seized Tazang, a key Chinese defense position near Shanghai, after seven days of intense fighting. Japanese units reached the Shanghai Nanking railway north of Nanjiang, threatening communications to Chapei and Kiangwan. Foreign experts questioned some claims but warned rail severance could isolate Chinese rear areas.
Martinsburg Lions Club president Marlin Eckard invites Winchester Lions to a West Virginia Zone meeting in Romney on November 4 with speakers Rep Jennings Randolph and humorist Riley Wilson. A worker on Senseney Road found an unusual winesap formed by two apples sharing a stem. The fruit split at the core with half of the stem in each apple, creating a joined double fruit.

Mission Secretary Rev F M Lucas spoke on evangelism and the gathering adjourned after committees reports and benevolence asks.
In Omaha the city council demands removal of portable homes within 48 hours, prompting promised public disruption. In Cleveland, federal Judge Paul Jones sentences James Widmer to 65 years for robbery connected to a murder case involving tainted samples and poison.
Clint on Ky October 26 William J Morse 45 a shell shock veteran was found guilty of murdering his youngest child with a butcher knife and was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Hickman circuit court jury.
Bolivian Minister Luis Fernando Gondhalla said he informed Undersecretary Welles at the State Department that Bolivia had accepted an invitation to attend the nine power conference in Brussels.
Dr Otto Behrer city chemist testified in the Anna Marie Hahn murder trial that tests performed in Cincinnati on October 26 found poison traces. The testimony focused on the toxicology results and their implications for the case against Hahn.
Berlin reports that Dr Hjalmar Schacht resigns as economics minister and Hitler accepts the resignation. The announcement comes amid ongoing government reshaping with Reichsfuhrer Adolf Hitler approving the move.

Mrs. Lucy Bell Michael 84 widow of William Michael died at 6 this morning at her Bloomery home after a three week illness. Born October 31 1853 in Morgan County she was the daughter of the late William and Amanda Unger. She lived with her son E W Michael a Bloomery merchant and enjoyed a large flower garden. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Stotler's Cross Roads Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Members of the Central District Committee of the Shenandoah Area Council met with John S. Scully presiding and heard reports showing the district in excellent condition. An aggressive campaign to recruit new Scouts and Cub Packs will follow National Council policies, with the annual district meeting planned for mid November and council meeting in December.

Mrs Emily F Henkel wife of Mathias H Henkel prominent Moorefield resident dies at home after protracted illness in eighty second year. Survived by husband a sister and two brothers all in Moorefield area. Funeral from Moorefield home Thursday.
Mrs Edith M Hottel was struck by an automobile as she left Market Street Methodist Church Sunday evening. She underwent a noon operation at Memorial Hospital for a fracture of the nose bones and also suffered facial injuries bruises and a fractured arm. Her condition was described as good as could be expected.
The Committee for Industrial Organization proposed conciliating with the American Federation of Labor on a plan likely to give John L. Lewis control of the federation. The C I O would form a department within the federation to cover mass production fields like marine, basic fabrication, and public utilities, and would organize mass workers industrially while craft unions stay under A F L. control.
