Sinking of Principessa Mafalda Claims Many Immigrants
Reports from Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo say more than 1,200 aboard the Italian liner Principessa Mafalda were aboard when it sank off Brazil after likely striking a reef and exploding boilers. Rescue ships aided by the Rio Grande Do Sul and steamers Athena Empire Star Formose Radioleine saved hundreds, with about 850 listed as missing and the total death toll uncertain.

John Madigan a Clarke county farmer who was beaten by his son Leo after Leo killed his brother Robert in Frederick county was taken to a hospital for X ray examination.
