The United States weighs a major pause in air strikes on North Vietnam this winter to show willingness for peace talks with Hanoi. U S air forces struck Phuc Yen North Vietnam the country’s largest air base 18 miles northwest of Hanoi marking the first attack of the war. MiGs shot at, runway cratered, several aircraft destroyed.
Sen. Vance Hartke accused Secretary of State Dean Rusk of committing the US to a broad Asia crusade without domestic consensus. He questioned why major Asian and NATO allies do not share the perceived threat and why costs are borne by US troops in Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines.
