Five Accidents Reported in County Over One Week
Deputy Sheriff Robert DeHaven investigated five crashes in the past week. No serious injuries occurred though property damage was high. A 1934 Chevrolet driven by Sarah Clowser of Mt Williams was damaged on Route 522 near Hayfield Gainesboro. The Newton Transportation Co tractor-trailer driven by Frank St John of Lenoir NC ran off the road at Albin damaging trees. St John was arrested for drunk driving after leaving the scene. Baden Larrick of Gore VA faces charges for leaving the scene and reckless driving from a crash last Thursday night.

In a gale with 70 mph winds, volunteers corralled a drifting German mine near the Bognor Regis seawall. The mine neared shallow water and the jetty as shops and hotels were abandoned. two policemen and a surveyor secured it with a wire rope. A bomb disposal team will render it safe when tides fall.

Harrisonburg Virginia October 23 Mrs Grace M Smith was found guilty of murder by a Rockingham Circuit Court jury for the February death of her husband Franck C Smith a World War II veteran. Judge H W Bertram sentenced her to twenty years in the penitentiary. Brother O C Maxwell supported her during the verdict.
