The Viet Cong launched another strong assault on the beleaguered Special Forces camp at Plei Me in South Viet Nam. Fighting subsided by late day, according to a U.S. military spokesman.
U S bombing concentrates on a single North Viet Nam and Red China rail line linking Hanoi with southern China. Officials say 130 bridges and key tracks are impassable while U S jets hit rails bridges and yards. Viet Cong attacks at Plei Me and Mekong Delta operations persist with heavy fighting and casualties.
President Johnson, back home from Bethesda, signs highway defection bill in East Room on eve of gall bladder operation. He thanks wife Lady Bird, lawmakers, and veterans groups, plans a Texas ranch stay during recovery, and notes international talks from his hospital bed. He visits wounded Marines and praises their sacrifice, telling them three billion people will benefit from their service.
Shenandoah National Park expects heavy weekend travel as cooler weather moves in. Park Superintendent Ro Taylor Hoskins notes it may be the last chance to view the Blue Ridge in fall dress. Linda Lee Ridings six year old girl reported kidnapped in 1961 has been found living as a migrant farm worker with Ramona Doughtery forty one. Doughtery is jailed on kidnapping suspicions after police say she initially claimed the child was given to her and later admitted kidnaping the baby to Oklahoma. Authorities have not located Linda's mother Barbara Ridings.
A complex system of low pressure areas over the northeast brings cloudiness and drizzle to much of Virginia today. The pattern suggests persistently gray skies and light rain across several regions.
Fairfax police report a racially charged altercation at W. T. Woodson High sparked by a tire slash incident. Twenty three students were arrested on charges including disorderly conduct and felonious assault with suspensions issued pending disposition. A white youth and a Negro student were involved along with fights on a stairway and a concealed weapon arrest. A short circuit triggered a fire alarm, sending 3,278 students outside.
Joseph G. DuBois a Goldsboro North Carolina Klansman and treasurer of the Goldsboro Klavern resigned from the Klan in a congressional witness chair declaring God and country must come before any Klan vows He handed over unit records to the House Un American Activities Committee and said he would not invoke the Fifth Amendment Though earlier Klan leaders refused to testify DuBois recounted his wartime service and life leading to his decision to quit the Klan and loyalty to the nation.
William Wayne Brendle, 31, of Stephens City, convicted by a Frederick County Circuit Court jury of second degree murder for the Feb. 3 shooting of Ralph E. Clark, Brendle's wife’s lover. The jury fixed his sentence at 17 years in the state penitentiary.
