Virginia Governor Mills Godwin and national figures mourn Harry F. Byrd Sr. as a towering political figure. Godwin praises Byrd's four decades of leadership and fiscal integrity while others call him a statesman of free government. Flags ordered flown at state buildings. Senator Spong lauds Byrd as Virginia's most famous son.
The Senate adopted a resolution of sorrow over the death of Harry F. Byrd Sr. who served Virginia in the U S Senate from 1933 to 1965. The secretary was directed to inform the House and send a copy to Byrd’s family with a transcript of praise remarks.
Vice-Mayor Stewart Bell Jr ordered municipal flags flown at half mast on the death of former Senator Harry F. Byrd. The statement praised Byrd’s courage integrity and lifelong public service. Mayor Battaile was out of town. Winchester Postmaster Wilbur Johnston also lowered the city post office flag.

South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky moved aside a rebellious cabinet member to head the government next week while away at Manila talks. Meantime ground fighting slowed with heavy losses reported in the Mekong Delta as Viet Cong casualties rose and U S helicopters suffered damage.
Authorities seized a 10 acre Wake Virginia farm believed to be the headquarters of a large military equipment embezzlement operation. Neighbors noted the visible stockpile included cranes road grader trucks cargo parachutes drums of oil and hydraulic fluid. FBI said it was investigating alleged theft of military property from Fort Rustis but would not confirm details.
South Africa's court ruled Dimitrio Tsafendas insane after he killed Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd. The 48 year old Mozambique native was ordered committed to jail pending transfer to a mental institution. The ruling ended the murder trial as Tsafendas was deemed unfit to plead.
Harry Flood Byrd Sr longtime Virginian and public figure died at 79 at his Berryville home after a brain tumor. The former governor senator and influential political organizer built a vast apple orchards empire and managed the Valley Turnpike. He served nearly 33 years in the U S Senate and shaped Virginia fiscal policy and road governance. Funeral plans were not announced.
