Imperial Wizard Robert Shelton faced sharp questioning from congressional investigators about KKK financial flows. Shelton offered no comment as lawmakers pressed for details on money movement and sources.
Senator Edward Kennedy reports more senators back Francis X. Morrissey than oppose him for a federal judgeship, while Everett Dirksen asserts Republicans will unite to oppose and return the nomination to committee. Mansfield remains cautious as session shortens.
In Santo Domingo rumors spread of a threat to the provisional government after fresh clashes in the capital. Three people were killed and seven wounded as rebel snipers clashed with army units before quiet returned in the afternoon. President Garcia Godoy held emergency meetings and sought to halt the violence with help from Col. Francisco Canardo. U S Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker returned from Washington to aid the crisis. Military units surrounded Radio Santo Domingo to prevent inflammatory broadcasts as forces readied 3400 troops and 42 armored vehicles in the suburbs for any renewed fighting.
The Bloodmobile at the Episcopal Parish House fell 33 pints short of its 134 pint quota as 107 people donated with six deferred for medical reasons. Colds in the community were cited as a factor, and a special appeal for blood for wounded in Viet Nam was issued.

London officials weigh Rhodesia's reply to Britain's call for restraint as Prime Minister Wilson contemplates next steps. Ian Smith says a principle decision exists but will not reveal details until Wilson receives the message. Britain warns of rebellion if a unilateral declaration occurs.
Two small boats in the Cuban refugee lanes in the Florida Straits were reported in distress. One boat was taking on water about 50 miles south of Key West. a cutter was sent to aid it. The other boat was adrift with unclear passenger counts.
In the central highlands two large Viet Cong assaults on government forces caused heavy losses. A U.S. helicopter was shot down with four American dead. Estimates put Viet Cong deaths at 150 to 200 across two actions, while defenses near Plei Me and Ba Long valley suffered lighter casualties for government troops. A U.S. Air Force bomber crashed near Pleiku, injuring one crewman.
North Viet Namese leaders think U S antiwar protests at home could force withdrawal from Vietnam. Officials say Hanoi sees U S resolve weaken amid demonstrations while Saigon notes talks remain unlikely. Observers compare U S dissent to the 1954 French Indochina exit.
