Five Children Die In Fire At Charles Town Building
Five young children under five perished in a second floor apartment fire in a building housing a restaurant and eight families. The blaze started shortly after 8 am and was blamed on a stove or children playing with matches. The Hughes children Lavanne 4 Lavetta 3 Curtis 11 months Brenda 2 and Jasper 11 months died of smoke inhalation. Firefighters confined the fire to one apartment but smoke and water damaged the building. The alarm was reported at 8 23 am with multiple fire companies responding.
