A Apple Special on the Central Vermont Railway derailed injuring fireman Matthews and engineer when the train ran onto an incorrect track. Rescue crews responded and transported the injured to a local hospital for treatment.
A head on crash on a dark rainy night near Winchester left Apple train engineer Charles Bower of Hagerstown and passenger engineer Myers injured. The apple engine overran the main track. the passenger train struck, overturning parts, with fireman Matthews fatally injured and the wreckage blocking the North Frederick pike. Reconstruction and inquiry followed as crews from Chambersburg aided cleanup.
