Former President Herbert C. Hoover, 90, remains critically ill after a series of internal bleedings. A morning bulletin reported the bleeding was arrested and his blood count normalized, but toxic byproducts in his bloodstream have left him in a state of unresponsiveness.
James P. Mitchell 63 former secretary of labor under Eisenhower died today in his Astor Hotel suite New York. He apparently suffered a heart attack with a physician present. Mitchell was a Crown Zellerbach Corp. VP in San Francisco directing industrial and public relations.
An airliner carrying about 30 people including Marshal Sergei Biryuzov, Soviet armed forces chief, crashed in fog near Belgrade, Serbia. The four-engine plane overshot a northern airport and burned on Avala Hill. all aboard were killed. The delegation was en route to celebrate Belgrade's WWII liberation.
More than 32,000 people joined the Stop Polio Sunday effort to receive the type two polio oral vaccine at area clinics. The three county totals were Winchester Frederick and Clarke with clinic sites at Handley John Kerr and other schools. A final clinic is planned for November 22 at the same locations. Doses missed can be made up at the health department or with a private physician. The drive is sponsored by area Jaycees with medical staff cooperation.
In Moscow Brezhnev declared a policy of peaceful coexistence disarmament and equality among Communist parties. He spoke from Lenin's Tomb at a Red Square reception for three cosmonauts praising Leninist collective leadership and UN peace. The statement follows Khrushchev's fall and dismissal remains unexplained.
