German born Argentine held on espionage charges
Teodore Erdmann Erich Lau a 44 year old German born Argentine citizen described by the FBI as the key figure in a German spy ring was held on espionage charges. He was paymaster of the Kurt Frederick Ludwig ring tied to information that aided Germany and the sinking of Allied ships. Lau was arrested on arrival from Canada and arraigned with a $50,000 bond. Nine others in the Ludwig ring were sentenced to 132 total years in prison in 1942.
