The torpedo damaged destroyer Kearny, 359 miles southwest of Iceland, limped toward an undisclosed port after yesterday’s encounter. No casualties reported. Navy and Congress seek clarity on attacker nationality and damage while Roosevelt defers to the Navy.
John H. Rosenberger of this city was elected lay leader of the Virginia Conference yesterday. The Rev. Harry G. Balthis of Montague Avenue Church advanced to the Fourth Year class and will next year seek elder candidacy. The Rev. Edgar A. Swann, son of Rev. T. M. Swann, recently became a chaplain in the U S Army and was advanced as well.
Mayor Winchester cites figures from Antietam Paper Co detailing defense program needs including 7 500 tons of mimeograph paper 2 500 tons of typewriter paper 50 000 000 file folders 3 750 000 sheets of carbon paper and 1 000 000 daily paper milk bottles for each Army camp 11 000 tons of board for shell containers and 1 250 000 000 envelopes this year.
Senators Norris Pepper and Gillette urged a hard fisted policy toward Japan amid Far East tension after Navy officials said American merchant ships had been ordered to port for instructions. Pepper called for a clear line and shooting if crossed, while Gillette saw discouragement in efforts to reach an understanding with Japan. Wheeler offered a contrasting view doubting recent moves.
In Lancaster California on October 18 a Colorado rancher’s son chased the woman who rejected him at high speed. He forced her off the highway and then shot himself as she watched in horror. Edward Thomas Robbins, 35, Jefferson Colorado, followed Mrs. Katherine Johnson Hunter 30, from Denver to a desert ranch, then died by a .22 pistol after she fled. Sheriff’s investigator W. J. Weirich said Robbins left a note claiming he had been peacemaking, which Mrs. Hunter rejected.
The Duke and Duchess will not visit Wakefield Manor in Rapahannock County this weekend as earlier reported. They will stay in Warrenton through the weekend after plans to visit Mrs George E Barnett were canceled.
Secretary Hall and Undersecretary Wells met with Kaname Wakasugi, Japanese minister to Washington, for a lengthy conference on American Japanese relations. Officials said the talks involved a general exchange of views and progress toward resolving differences despite Japan forming a new cabinet.

Topics include astronomy meteorology oceanography biology geology geophysics and cartography among others. Committee chairmen Riley Nichols Mason and Warren oversee arrangements and ticketing.
A Virginia Methodist Conference report urges a broad upturn in social welfare work to address labor, minority, rural delinquency, and poverty. It calls for surveys of wage scales at Methodist institutions, a rural welfare committee, and a full-time social welfare worker next year.
Findlay Ohio October 18 A 73 year old man arrested in a vagrancy camp is held as a suspect in the Harney Nevada train wreck of 1939 that killed 24 and injured 117 Sheriff Lyle Harvitt says the man has no fixed address and matches fingerprints found on tools near the wreck scene He wore trousers with baseball stitch repairs similar to those on jackets recovered after the derailment and he denies ever having been in Nevada.
A Netherlands foreign office spokesman said all facilities of the Netherlands East Indies would be placed at the disposal of the United States in a war with Japan and Indies bases for the Pacific fleet could be obtained "for the asking." He stressed policy as unchanging and that the Netherlands would stand by the democracies in the Pacific.

Three Alexandria Virginia students Cox Price Cunningham signed extradition waivers in Portland Maine as they prepared to be sent to Maryland on murder charges in the Browning killing. Sheriff Bennington and Trooper Thomas planned to accompany the trio back by train and car. Cox admitted firing the fatal shot in Browning's car as investigators cited changing stories. The suspects were held without bail after court appearance.
Edward A. Cudahy Sr. founder and head of the Cudahy Packing Company died at 81 in Chicago from a heart ailment. He spent 68 years in the packing industry beginning at age 13 driving cattle from pens to the slaughtering house.
Charleston West Virginia October 18 The Southern Coal Producers Association Inc an outgrowth of dissension over a new union wage agreement was chartered in West Virginia 13 member coal associations from West Virginia Virginia Tennessee and Kentucky will meet in Cincinnati to organize The association headquartered in Washington DC aims to study report and advance southern producers interests including markets and freight rates and to bargain collectively A United Mine Workers CIO spokesman said the Appalachian conference would still be used to draft basic contracts.
