The Supreme Court opens a two day session with five sit-in cases involving state trespass laws used to back private racial exclusion. Appeals cover Maryland, South Carolina, and Florida, while other convictions of demonstrators await review.
The General Assembly starts its yearly debate on seating Red China in the United Nations. The Soviet Union does not sponsor the proposal this year but will back it. Albania is the European Communist nation pushing the China issue.
Firefighters remind that fire school registration is at Friendship Fire Hall 6 to 7 tonight with sessions at the hall tomorrow and Wednesday night. Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Fairfax Room Christ Episcopal Church 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blood Program Chairman Jes Zuckerman urges all qualified donors to come. Temperatures forecast to rise slightly with a low in the 30s tonight and a five day period near normal to five degrees above normal. Mrs. Michael Abe found a key chain with several Kline School Fun Festival tickets and requests the owner call 662-8988 after 5 p.m.
Bonn Germany AP Kon rad Adenauer 87 reluctantly steps from the West German chieftaincy after more than 14 years as head of state. He faces a lingering rift with 17 million East Germans under Communist rule while his allies credit his leadership for Germanys postwar strength and Western ties.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors tentatively approved an amendment to building permit laws. It would allow the Health Dept to issue permits for sewer water systems before construction and require Health Dept approval for projects involving sewer and water. The action delays last month’s regulation until the November meeting.
Senate and House committees plan a slow week as civil rights and tax cut bills linger. The Senate Finance Committee begins public hearings on an 11 billion dollar tax reduction with Secretary Dillon testifying for several days. The House Judiciary Committee continues closed sessions on a sweeping civil rights bill with Atty. Gen. Kennedy invited to share views.
Weekend attendance in Shenandoah National Park set an all time high with 80 843 cars entering Skyline Drive. Chief Ranger Joseph Kulesza credited peak fall color and record traffic beating the prior 67 661 from October weekend.
A Greyhound bus and an egg truck collided in dense fog on the New Jersey Turnpike near Newark. Two women died and 32 were injured as passengers were freed after nearly two hours. The bus driver, Theodore Nichols of Pittsburgh, survived with injuries.
The Star joins National Newspaper Week highlighting newspapers and freedoms of expression. An editorial by Harry F. Byrd Jr. from 1953, awarded the George Washington Honor Medal, is republished on Page 4.

At St. Peter's Basilica the Vatican Ecumenical Council failed to reach a two thirds majority on a motion to permit vernacular use and other liturgical changes in the Mass. Of 2 242 voters 1 417 approved while 781 supported with reservations and eight null. The document goes back for revisions before resubmission.
Sen. Barry Goldwater sets January 27 as D-day for deciding active candidacy with filing deadlines for Illinois and other states. Illinois primary matters for convention votes. New Hampshire and Wisconsin follow, with potential contests in California, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio and beyond shaping the GOP race.
Thirteen people died in Virginia weekend crashes raising the 1963 toll to 738, with victims from Saltville to Norfolk and Prince William, including a USS Tutuila serviceman and drivers on routes 91 619 and U S 60. Other entries note a drowning near Toano and a pickup collision in Virginia Beach.
Secretary of the Navy Fred Korth resigns effective November 1. Paul Nitze will replace him as tensions over nuclear powered carriers and the TFX fighter plane dispute hover in the background. Korth seeks private business interests and cites pressing private affairs. White House confirms Kennedy accepted the resignation after Korth underwent ear surgery in Bethesda Maryland.
Firefighters from Round Hill Gore Shawnee and Front Royal fought woods and brush fires over the weekend. A woods blaze between Mt Williams Road and Cedar Creek Grade required initial response at 11 35 a m with Round Hill recalled at 12 40 p m. Shawnee tackled a Sulphur Spring Road brush fire around 9 a m with a later return around 10 p m to wet down the area. Front Royal crews answered two calls including Locust Pin Grass and sawdust burn at noon and a separate flue fire at George Lewis’s Happy Creek Road home yesterday afternoon.
A strong high pressure system has peaked and begun drifting southward. It will continue to influence Virginia for the next two days, bringing fair and dry conditions with temperatures around the low 170s today and the mid 70s on Tuesday. The Temple Bell for rent lists adults only at 308 Miller St and contact at 303 Jefferson St.
