Governor Tuck telegraphed President Truman offering wholehearted support for the food conservation program. He said he had called Virginians to cooperate fully in the war against famine and will designate a state contact to work with the citizens food committee led by Charles Lackman.
Grain prices climbed on the Chicago Board of Trade while hogs fell at Omaha. December wheat reached a seasonal high near 2.95½ per bushel as corn and oats rose, cotton futures gained in New York, and top grade butter slid in wholesale markets.
Elmer Otis Coffman 62 of 333 National Ave. died 10:45 a m yesterday at Winchester Memorial Hospital after a Friday fall and a later fall on Piccadilly St. An inquest was set for today. He leaves a widow Miss Bessie Billmyer and siblings in Virginia and West Virginia. Funeral services will be held at his home and Rio Lutheran Church with Rev. Eisenberg and Rev. Zirkle officiating. Active pallbearers are named. honorary pallbearers are Modern Woodmen members.

The Rev Dr Lambdin pastor at St. Luke's Methodist Washington and head of the Army and Navy Chaplains Association will speak at Armistice Day services Sunday November 9. A Johns Hopkins and American University graduate he served five and a half years as a navy chaplain and was dean of the navy chaplains training school in Williamsburg. His postwar work includes uniting three nearby Methodist churches into one larger Glover Park church.

The Associated Press reports pleasant conditions across the nation with no cold fronts from Canada. Temperatures ranged 10 to 20 degrees above normal in the north, while the Gulf States remain in mild conditions. Forecasters in Chicago expect continued unseasonably warm weather.

Expect showers totaling around a quarter inch mainly on Sunday with little to none in western sections. Washington October 14 Senator Taft of Ohio and former Minnesota governor Stassen suggested possible united backing at the 1948 Republican convention. Both camps deny any formal deal though mutual praise since Des Moines signals coordination to block Dewey. Stassen predicts about 130 delegates from six Midwest states may back him. Taft backers seek joint influence as Dewey looms.
The Bermuda Queen, a large Boeing flying boat with 69 aboard, made a forced mid ocean landing in rough seas 500 miles east of Newfoundland. Winds and 35 foot swells hampered lifeboat transfers as Coast Guard cutters and weather ships aided the rescue attempts. The plane, carrying Britons and Americans, was undamaged but fuel exhausted. no injuries reported.
City arrests totaled 199 in September, down from August by 15. Drunkenness accounted for 92 arrests, disorderly conduct 45, vehicle-law violations 40, and driving drunk 6. Parking meter violations reached 161. 37 offenses were charged overall. Winchester lockup housed 31 white and 9 colored inmates.
In Newton Massachusetts a 15 year old girl was found shot to death while her 18 year old sister was critically wounded and their father Fiore D Antonio aged 42 was dying from what investigators call self administered poison Police say Nina D Antonio was killed by a gunshot while Mary D Antonio was beaten and the father was found unconscious with a bottle of acid nearby a hammer and shotgun parts were discovered on the kitchen floor and in the cellar
