Nixon draws massive 700000 crowd in Atlanta after a confetti laden welcome as he pledges a new American majority. McGovern airs a taped account from a GI in Minnesota as he continues railing against the Vietnam war and Nixon’s policies.
President Nixon, at the White House, received a breakfast briefing from Henry Kissinger and Gen. Alexander Haig on four days of secret Paris talks with Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy. Rumors of a near peace persisted while both sides kept silent about progress. The Paris talks entered their 163rd session with Hanoi and Washington sticking to hard positions amid calls for a U.S. pullout and Thieu’s ouster.
North Vietnamese forces overran the Ben Het border camp in the central highlands in a two day assault. Saigon reported heavy shelling and loss of contact with the base as U S fighter bombers failed to dislodge the attackers. The Montagnard garrison suffered dozens killed and many wounded as the camp near the Ho Chi Minh Trail was finally captured.
The Senate planned a vote that could start sending 2.65 billion dollars in the first installment of a 30-billion program to tax funds to states cities and local governments. If approved and signed by Nixon, the five year revenue sharing measure is part of his new federalism. The Treasury has begun mailing 39,000 checks before the November 7 election. The House already passed the bill 265 to 110 after a final form compromise.
Five workers are unaccounted for and seven injured after an explosion at a dynamite plant in Avoca Pennsylvania. Four missing workers were inside the explosive mixing building, with pieces reported up to 300 feet away. A prior blast at the same plant on Oct 25 1971 killed three.
The Lord Fairfax Planning Commission District tabled a regional water quality management study contract for two weeks to allow revisions. Frederick County Administrator Roger Alderman led the motion, with Winchester City Manager Wendell Seldon seconding, and calls for sharing revised copies with all member jurisdictions. Alderman said the contract had not been reviewed by legal counsel and would be reexamined by Frederick County once an official copy is obtained.

More than 100 volunteer firemen from Winchester and Frederick County completed the 1972 Winchester Fire School. The program combined classroom work with live firefighting demonstrations and concluded Tuesday with a banquet and graduation ceremonies. Star photographer David B. In New York a federal undercover agent and two suspected cocaine dealers died after a trap set by narcotics agents backfired in a West Side motel. A supervisory agent was critically wounded. The two men planned to sell 10 kilos of cocaine for 160000.
The comptroller of the currency, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. issued calls for the condition of banks as of the close of business Tuesday October 10. National banks, member banks, and insured state nonmember banks are all to report.
Congress inching toward adjournment plans to tackle major bills including the Social Security welfare measure and a $250 billion spending ceiling. The House passed a large defense appropriations bill and a revenue sharing measure sending them toward the President for signature. Senate and House committees continue to clash over spending limits while conferees work on the Social Security bill likely pushing adjournment to early next week. The antibusing bill faced a failed bid to end debate, delaying final action and potential adjournment.
