Middletown Fire Co responded to a grass fire along the B and O Railroad near the depot Thursday evening. Two trucks and 18 firemen fought the blaze for about two hours after a 7 p.m. alarm. Minor damage to wiring and paint and a broken settlement bowl on a tractor owned by R. V. Martin were reported. The fire occurred at 6 20 p.m. This fire follows a tractor fire called in on Wednesday.
Gov. J. Millard Tawes ordered two men returned to Virginia to face charges. Robert Booker Lewis faces escaping from the Virginia State Penitentiary where he was serving five years for grand larceny. Henry Robert Partyka is charged with grand larceny in the theft of jewelry from an Arlington store. Extradition granted yesterday.

The Winchester Inter-Community Concert Association starts a six day fund drive on October 29 to raise money for artists. Volunteers will seek memberships during a week long campaign with discounts and a free subscription for volunteers who sign up ten. Last year 460 subscribers. the goal is over 500 with concerts staged at Shea College auditorium.
Philippine Airlines turbo-prop Fokker crashed at Manila International Airport killing the three pilots aboard during practice takeoffs and landings.
Clarke County Red Cross blood program chairman Col. Ernest O. Lee announced a telephone solicitation to recruit donors for the Bloodmobile visit on Nov. 2. Seventy eight volunteers will place over 1100 calls in two weeks to line up donors, and Clarke County exceeded its yearly quota by 138 percent. A Washington Regional Blood Council meeting at Front Tuesday will discuss blood procurement and distribution issues.
