Paris dispatch reports heavy artillery duels on the Somme front and in the Meuse Woevre region with calm at night elsewhere. French planes bombed the German railroad station at Vigneules as part of ongoing Austro-Hungarian theater operations.
London reports that 500000 to 800000 additional soldiers will be needed for the British army in the next six months. MPs say the government can raise up to 1000000 more men if needed without extending conscription to Ireland.
Rome reports the Italian drive toward Trieste with heavy bombardment east of Monfalcone and near Hill 208 where Italians reportedly penetrated Austrian lines and captured over 5,000 prisoners. A Austrian raid hit Avalonia Albania while Greece surrenders its fleet to the Entente.
William B. Seabrook and wife of Atlanta are passengers aboard the French liner Le Espange traveling from Bordeaux to New York. Seabrook, son of Rev W L Seabrook, served as an ambulance officer in France with the American Ambulance Field Service and earned the Croix de Guerre. His wife nurses at the American Hospital, Paris. The Espange reportedly faces danger from German submarines.
Amil Orndorff aged 14 son of Mr and Mrs Ashby Orndorff died this morning at home near Isaac's Creek after a brief diphtheria illness He is survived by two sisters and one brother Friends in Winchester recall his kindness and service to his mother with many personal sacrifices The body is expected to be buried in the Isaac's Creek graveyard near the family’s recent residence
Mrs Lot Kackley hosted relatives and friends for the wedding of Viola L Kackley to Walter Neill Rutherford at Minnie Wood Chapel Virginia on October 7. Rev O D Lambert officiated. After a reception the couple left for a ten day trip and will reside in Berryville where the groom works.
A head on collision occurred at 7 25 am on single track near Knob Mountain Ridgeley between a Western Maryland employees train and a Hagerstown excursion train. Two Western Maryland employees died Benjamin Fairchild and Carl Hinkle nine employees and five passengers injured. The most seriously injured Edward Mercer and John M Annsetto.
A Lynchburg manufacturer reported leather and shoe materials have doubled in price over the past year with some items up 100 per cent. He warned finished shoes could rise by 1 to 2 dollars next season as leather sourcing shifts due to the war. He noted prior reliance on Russia and Austria and said supplies have been cut off since the conflict began, driving prices to near prohibitive levels.

Mrs. Keene widow of famed racehorse owner James R. Keene died Monday night at age seventy six. Born in Frederick County Virginia she was daughter of Colonel Leroy Dangerfield and later moved to California. She married James R. Keene in 1868 and is survived by two children Foxtall Keene and Mrs. Jeaste Keene Frost and several grandchildren.

James Barr, ten year old son of Mrs. Clayton Hollis, was making a fire in a cook stove on North Weebington Street when he poured oil on the flames. The blaze scorched his hair eyebrows and eyelashes and blistered his face. Medical aid was provided and he rests today.
