The Farmers Livestock Exchange near Winchester opens Monday at 1 pm with a thousand buyers expected. The two story steel brick arena seats 500 and holds 1500 with parking for 500 autos, pens for 212 stalls, and a full restaurant and offices as livestock arrive for the first weekly auction day.

Congressmen returning from a six week study of Europe’s economy disagree on emergency aid for Western Europe this winter. Nixon argues Europe lacks sufficient food and faces worse conditions than before the war while Andresen says the situation is not as dire and spring relief may suffice. Also returning with them are Case Monroney Mahon and Richards.
The State department announced Italy will get 28 million dollars in gold taken from the Bank of Italy by German forces and later captured by the U S Fifth Army. The gold will help Italy fund food and fuel purchases.

Joseph Mayo a ship's deck engineer from Quincy Massachusetts was shot in the forehead and died after two policemen dragged his body from a doorway in a block where the only occupied house was taken by Negro residents. Cornell Simmons 27 was booked for the shooting. Six residents hid inside the first floor as flames erupted from the doorway around 3 a.m. Jesse Williams said he moved in yesterday and was negotiating to buy two other properties in the block.
Savings bond sales reported for Virginia statewide September total 6,678,739 dollars. Winchester and Frederick county combined 88,393 dollars. Clarke county contributed 26,800 dollars.
The 4-H club sweepstakes at the Baptist Garland Cather fair crowned top honors to Garland Cather a 20 year old Round Hill participant holding a corn prize. Fred Stine Jr. age 13 son of County Agent Fred Stine took second. George Cather aged 12 from Round Hill earned third and Roger Ramey 13 from Hayfield took fourth with the group shown holding corn potatoes pumpkin and eggs.
