The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival seeks help from Gov. Thomas B. Stanley and Virginia officials in London to locate the forebears of James Wood, founder of Winchester Virginia born in Winchester England about 1707 59. The Winchester Common Council approved a building permit for Cities Service Oil Co. to build a service station at the northeast corner of National Ave. and Kerr St. The vote was 11 to 1 with Mayor Claude B. Smalts Jr dissenting.
Adlai E Stevenson announced a 50 member National Business Council of leading business and finance figures to back his presidential bid. He said the move promotes inclusive representation of interests and duties of government and business. About 6 000 people attended his Seattle speech at Civic Auditorium. Honorary co chairmen named: William L Clayton and Joseph P Kennedy. Stevenson flew in from Libertyville Michigan to Seattle and would rally in Portland Oakland and a nationwide NBC telecast tomorrow.
The Common Council endorsed a state constitutional amendment to exempt or partially exempt tangible personal property from taxation. The vote was unanimous after remarks by City Commissioner of Revenue Taylor L. Barr, who noted local effects depend on General Assembly action and subsequent local adoption.

Libertyville Illinois reports a 28 year old animal trainer killed by a 500 pound European brown bear during a television appearance. The trainer Paul Lemery entered the cage as his fiancee Shirley Rodriguez tried to intervene with a seven foot pole and sugar lures. A bystander Robert Belefuille fired a rifle, hitting the bear in the head, but Lemery died en route to hospital.
Miami and San Juan forecasters waited for the Air Force plane report on a tropical disturbance 2,300 miles southeast of Miami. The system had winds up to 45 mph and was centered about 1,200 miles east of Puerto Rico moving west-northwest.
The Navy announced the supercarrier Forrestal is laid up in Portsmouth Virginia for repairs to a turbine. The 60 000 ton ship reported fractured blades and was ordered to the Norfolk Navy Yard for repairs on Monday while the cause is investigated. City Auditor Robert S. Barbour told the Common Council that September 30 receipts show $590,821.44 in city taxes due includes $443,501.69 in 1956 real estate taxes and $131,900.46 in 1956 personal property taxes with $15,419.29 from other years. Real estate payments reach $14,358.54 and personal property $2,304.96.
Italian police stormed a village school at Terrazzano freeing 95 children aged 6 to 10 and four teachers held for six hours by brothers Arturo and Osvaldo Sampato who demanded two million lire. The siege involved a police response after a warning from an asylum director.
At Langley VA the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics announced a four stage rocket propelled missile reached speeds over 6600 mph and altitude above 200 miles in a test from Wallops Island VA. The flight ended in the Atlantic and featured instruments recording temperatures and telemetry.
The Virginia forecast calls for mostly clear and cooler conditions with some interior frost and lows from 26 to 32 in the mountains. Temperatures will average 3 to 6 degrees below normal with rain likely Saturday and possibly late Monday. Two Rice Institute sophomores from Houston were killed on campus while attempting a prank inside the mechanical laboratory building. Karl B. Bailey, 19, suffocated by carbon monoxide as he clung to a ladder in the campanile stack. Cecil William Carrol, 19, died after falling while trying to rescue him. The plan involved climbing the smokestack to hang a tire trophy from the top as part of the freshman guidance event.
In Syracuse Kefauver accused Republicans of concealing a $5,000 campaign gift from oil executive H B Keck. He offered to display a Houston check dated Jan 10 1956 made out to the United Republican Dinner Committee and signed by Keck, noting the check was cashed.
