The dispatch reports Nazi forces pressing toward a major Volga city amid heavy Allied and Soviet actions. It notes U.S. and British pressure, with claims of significant German advances and strategic stakes in the region.
General MacArthur's airmen dropped 60 tons of bombs on Rabaul New Britain targeting supply dumps barracks and jetty works. Planes faced heavy anti aircraft fire but all returned after starting fires visible for miles. Simultaneously Australian forces pushed toward The Gap in New Guinea while reporting contact with retreating Japanese.

Schoolchildren across Winchester raised 169604 pounds of scrap metal in a three week drive to aid war industries. Handley High School led per capita with 116 pounds, John Kerr 101, and Virginia Avenue and Handley Elementary 52 each.
A massive search for seven life term convicts who fled Stateville prison near Joliet escalated with lie detector tests and a mobile crime laboratory. Gov. Dwight Green ordered the investigation as 74 squad cars and over 250 officers from state county and city forces joined the hunt.
Thirty seven Frederick County men will report to Charlottesville on Tuesday morning October 13 for their final physical exam prior to induction. Those passing will return home for a 14 day furlough. In Baltimore an early morning fire on West Lombard Street killed four children aged eight to 16 and critically injured a 20 month old. Norma Brandt, 16, dropped the baby Gary from a second floor window as flames spread, while Lorraine eight Shirley 12 and Paul Brandt Jr fourteen perished in the home. Mrs Brandt left moments earlier for milk, returning as the infant fell to the sidewalk.
London reports that American Flying Fortresses and Liberator bombers returning from a daylight raid on Germany impressed British air experts. The attack involved 100 bombers with 500 Allied fighters, striking factories and rail yards near Lille. Liberators claimed seven German fighters for one loss. Germans threatened reprisals.
The State Highway Department safety division says it is considering extending the semi annual auto inspection period by 30 days to November 30. Lt. W. L.
