Docks Readied as West Coast Longshore Shutdown Ended

West Coast port authorities prepared docks for longshoremen to return to work after a 100 day strike that cost an estimated 1.7 billion in losses. ILWU members reported for duty as a federal court ordered a 10 day return to work while talks on a longer cooling off period proceed.

Fire Damages Two Rooms in Round Hill Home

A fire early today caused moderate damage to two rooms and furnishings in Paul Lamp’s house on old Rt. 50 west across from Gumm's Service Station. Oil stove in the living room ignited curtains and furniture, with Round Hill firemen on scene about an hour.

Russians Retaliate For Ouster In Moscow

Crocodiles Reintroduced in Everglades After Captive Rearing

Everglades biologists Richard Klukas and John Ogden released eight captive bred crocodiles into a stream feeding a lake about 30 miles south of the park entrance. The youngsters, Charlie among them, weighed 3 pounds to 2 pounds 5 ounces and had been hatched from eggs found in the wild.

Independence Center Planned at Yorktown

The Virginia Independence Bicentennial Commission announced plans to develop an Independence Victory Center in Yorktown to mark the United States 200th birthday. The event period spans 1974 to 1983 and will involve Virginians of all ages races and regions. The commission may also back centers in Northern Virginia Norfolk Fredericksburg Richmond and Charlottesville while designating existing colonial and revolutionary sites as Shrines of Independence.
