New York defeats Milwaukee 3-2 to force a deciding seventh game in New York. Torre and Aaron homer for Milwaukee. Berra and Mantilla homer for New York in a pitchers duel.
Arkansas Gov Faubus said no solution exists to the Little Rock integration standoff except removing the nine Central High School pupils. He cited a cooling off period and possible withdrawal of six girls and three boys under federal troop protection. President Eisenhower voiced hope federal troops may soon depart but gave no specifics as the school remained calm with soldiers guiding students inside.
Berryville council approved plaques for the new filtration and sewerage plants citing contractor George B. Thomas. The water and sewerage committee favored continuing his management and noted a 15 year tenure. The sewer loan from Doubleday will be repaid by rents, avoiding more debt.
Rice was called out on strikes. Buhl was also ruled out. Mantila flied out to Bauer.
Logan caught Bauer's popup. Kubek rolled out, Mantilla to Torre. Slaughter walked. Berra slammed a home run into the lower right field stands, scoring Slaughter ahead of him. McDougald singled. Lumpe walked. Haney signaled for Ernie Johnson. Simpson struck out. Two runs, two hits, no errors, two left.
Logan fouled to Berra. Mathews crashed a double off the auxiliary score board in right field. Coleman threw out Aaron, Mathews taking third. Covington fouled to Lumpe.
In the fifth, Torre homered into the lower right field stands after a sequence that saw Coleman double and several outs. Berra grounded out, and Johnson struck out as the inning produced one run on one hit with no errors.
McDougald stopped Mantilla on a grounder and threw him out at first. Logan popped to Coleman. Mathews bounced out, Coleman.
The Winchester-Frederick Community Chest fund drive has reached the halfway point with $24,926 raised toward an $48,611 goal for eight member services including the Salvation Army and Boy Scout programs. Campaign chairman Charles E. Toan reported the progress at noon and volunteers were asked to daily report signed pledges and remaining prospects while three Red Feather thermometers track the drive in downtown.
A public hearing is scheduled for November 5 at City Hall at 7 30 p m on an ordinance to allow a retail food store and parking lot on the south side of West Amherst Street on lands formerly owned by the Shenandoah Valley Academy. The hearing precedes final readings and vote at the November 12 council meeting. Local residents from Academy Lane area appeared to present views.
London reports a British astronomer warns the Soviet earth satellite could be destroyed tonight as debris from Giacobini Zinner comet crosses the Earth’s orbital path. Professor A C Lovell, head of Jodrell Bank, urges observers to monitor signals for any effects while noting debris may or may not strike the satellite or reenter the atmosphere.
Harry F. Byrd Jr., editor of The Winchester Evening Star, was elected the second vice president of The Associated Press by the AP board. Byrd has served on the 18 member board since 1950 and on the executive committee since 1954. He previously led The Daily News-Record and now presides over Rockingham Publishing Co.
An influenza outbreak at Virginia Military Institute forces postponement of Friday and Saturday homecoming dances. The VMI Davidson football game proceeds as scheduled while about 150 cadets are in the infirmary with a mild flu. Cadets face campus restrictions and a recovery period of about six days.
President Eisenhower announced at a news conference that the United States will launch test satellites in December and place a full instrumented satellite in March. The timetable was presented during the briefing with additional remarks.
Eisenhower welcomed Soviet satellite achievement while cautioning on its value and impact on US science and missiles. He warned against rushing to orbit for fear of harming scientific goals and military progress. The briefing touched on Vanguard, Zhukov, and Little Rock integration, plus a local rummage sale notice.
Berryville reports 130 people have pledged to donate blood at the Bloodmobile visit on Oct 16 at the Community Building. The annual quota is 150 pints, with 70 pledges needed to reach the goal, according to a Red Cross spokesman.
Neil H McElroy was sworn in as the sixth secretary of defense at a White House ceremony. President Eisenhower presided and awarded the Medal of Freedom to Charles E Wilson, the retiring defense chief, after McElroy took the oath.
