Russian forces push into southern Hungary reaching the Tisza river as Beograd's approaches are cleared by combined Russian and Yugoslav Partisan units, with Budapest looming as a key objective and German defenses bolstered along East Prussia.
Prime Minister Churchill arrives with Anthony Eden for initial talks with Premier Stalin and Molotov in Moscow. The London forecast hints at postwar Germany control and Dumbar ton Oaks issues while Harriman represents the U S at the conference. A Russian band plays God Save the King before the Soviet hymn.
A strong U S battleforce attacked Marcus Island with heavy gunfire silencing much of the coast defenses. The assault, by Adm Halsey’s third fleet, damaged shore installations and involved 16 inch guns from U S battleships. Meanwhile Koror and Peleliu reporting progress and Japanese losses mount as Marines press inland.

Dewey urged Poland’s permanent reestablishment while Wagner supported restoration, and Ickes warned of a dangerous isolationist faction. Willkie’s death prompts tributes as Republicans plan a re-broadcast of Dewey’s Charleston speech.
Robert Collier and Lee Riley Franklin face first degree murder and accessory charges after Erskin Roy Sisk died from a stabbing Saturday night in Winchester Memorial Hospital. Sisk, 42, died two hours after the assault at the Apple Blossom Restaurant dispute over a one dollar debt. The knife was recovered and sent to FBI headquarters for inspection.
Mrs. Alpha F. Stevens receives War Department telegram confirming Pvt. Robert P. Stevens died of wounds in France on September 12 after being seriously wounded on September 28. He was 26, from Scranton, lived 24 years here, served in the infantry, and is survived by wife and mother.
The United States Great Britain China and Russia outline a permanent peace system backed by armed forces. A general assembly a security council with big four plus France an economic and social council and an international court of justice would govern peace efforts. Air detachments would be ready for action while overall force commitments await congressional authorization.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors said they would entertain contracts for operating the county home after their regular meeting today. The present superintendent T. W. Russell has resigned effective March 1, 1945. The session mainly approved bills and reviewed county reports.

Wendell L. Willkie died at Lenox Hill Hospital after a streptococcic throat infection and coronary thrombosis. He was 52 and will lie in state at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City from 2 PM today with services at 3 PM tomorrow. Burial will be in Rushville Indiana, pending his son Philip Willkie’s return from convoy duty. The public may view the body today until midnight. Messages of sympathy came from President Roosevelt and Governor Dewey among others.
Rome dispatches say German forces may be evacuating Athens as British troops close in on Corinth. Allies report near-control of Peloponnesus ports, with Greece and southern Greece under Allied pursuit and supply of captured puppet troops.
American troops moved about two miles closer to Bologna along Highway 65 in bad weather, shrinking the distance to the major Po Valley hub to 10 miles amid reinforced German defenses. In the Adriatic area the Eighth Army cleared German resistance on Monte Gallo after crossing the Fiumicino river.
Price Administrator Chester Bowles said the Price Administration will set reconversion price ceilings above 1942 levels when costs have risen enough to prevent absorption and bring products back to market. He noted some industries may need quick increases, with automobile firms expected to press for higher prices to restore car availability.
In Front Royal Virginia on October 9 two Riverton Lime and Stone Company workers died when a rock ledge fell in a quarry. Marek Fogle about 60 and Denzel Corder about 30 were killed while a third employee was injured. Corder was crushed and pinned beneath a massive boulder requiring blasting to remove the body.

Hodges forces push toward Julich and Cologne while House-to-house fighting tightens German resistance on Crucifix Hill. Seventh Army closes toward Belfort as Patton’s men advance near Metz and Canadian troops land at Hoofdplaat near Antwerp.
Allied air forces mount a massive raid over Germany including Schweinfurt Coblenz and Mainz targets with about 1 100 bombers and 900 fighters. Weather hindered some runs yet 10 000 allied planes pressed the campaign, while Ninth Air Force and RAF operations hit trains railways barges and oil facilities.
