Cross Burning Law Challenged Before Virginia Court of Appeals

Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals heard arguments over the state cross burning law. Wilson Ralph Price of Richmond, sentenced to three years for burning a cross on a public sidewalk in January 1967, contends the statute covers only privateproperty without permission. The state argues the law applies to both public and private property, is not vague, and is necessary to deter coercion and intimidation. Also heard were appeals of Roger A. Lespins for attempted murder and Edward Duffy Phillips for arson to collect fire insurance.
