U S paratroopers launched a large operation on the fringe of Viet Cong areas and used tear gas. A military spokesman said contact with Viet Cong forces was significant though details were limited. Each action will be decided individually rather than a blanket order.
Reports say Luna 7 made a crash landing as authorities justify use of nonlethal gas in a controversial operation. In Vietnam, thousands of American troops and Australian forces pursue Viet Cong in a dense jungle area 30 miles north of Saigon with B 52 strikes and a heavy ground push by the 173rd Airborne Brigade along Highway 13 toward Ben Cat.
George L. Craig, Winchester Education Association member, was unanimously elected to a two year term as President of District G of the Virginia Education Association. He previously served as vice president in 1964 65 and held multiple district roles. He is a native of Winchester with degrees from the University of Maryland and the College of William and Mary.

In Cincinnati Ohio a 55 year old woman was trapped when her umbrella opened suddenly as she loaded packages into her car at a shopping center. Firefighters and the life squad responded to free her head from the umbrella ribs.
Several thousand Indonesian Muslims destroyed the PKI headquarters in Jakarta today as army troops kept streets open. Fire trucks battled the flames while crowds chanted anti PKI slogans and pro American sentiments surfaced at the embassy.
The State Highway Department authorizes two Winchester traffic relief projects on US 522 and Route 7. A 0.8 mile Commercial St extension costs 74 000 with 15 percent city funding and 85 percent state funding. Route 7 studies cost 50 000 with 15 percent city and 85 percent state shares. Construction may wait three or more years.
The House passed President Johnson's highway beautification bill as he was hospitalized for gall bladder surgery. The measure requires states to curb billboards and junkyards on interstates and primary roads outside commercial zones, with a fast tracked vote sparking Republican anger over limited debate.
The Virginia delegation split along party lines as the House passed the highway beautification bill 245 to 138 after a marathon 14 hour session. Voting for the bill were 219 Democrats and 26 Republicans. against were 49 Democrats and 89 Republicans.
In Flint Hill Rappahannock County a dispute at a labor camp left James W. Baxter dead on arrival and Nathaniel Wells seriously wounded. Baxter, reportedly stabbed Wells after an argument. Wells then retrieved a gun and shot Baxter. Both men were taken to Warren Memorial Hospital by a passerby. Authorities say the case is under investigation by Rappahannock County Sheriff Charles Estes with no charges filed yet.
President Johnson underwent a successful gall bladder operation with removal of a kidney stone in the ureter. The procedure began at 7 a.m. and ended by 9:15 a.m. with no cardiac issues. he is expected to stay 10 days to two weeks. Vice President Humphrey acted as standby chief executive.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey left his Maryland home before 9 a.m. to assume standby chief executive duties while President Johnson was in Bethesda Naval Hospital. Moyers reported Johnson in good spirits as surgery began and Humphrey said he would stay near the executive office, kept fully informed by presidential staff.
Rainfall yesterday reached 1.40 inches at the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory from 8:30 a.m. to the present, the largest 24 hour total since March 5 when 1.70 inches fell. The month’s October total is 2.04 inches, with a year-to-date total of 24.90 inches and a 52 year October average of 3.13 inches.
Growers report higher prices and incentives from apple processors to attract volume of preferred York varieties. Virginia Farm Bureau Marketing Association Apple Committee chair J. Robert Russell says processors are short of normal supply and growers have received inducements for York deliveries. The association will monitor offers and inform growers of best deals.
