Governor Thomas E. Dewey urged federal aid to states to address a huge housing deficit and slum clearance. Speaking at the Alfred E. Smith housing project groundbreaking in New York City, he vowed action to lift slums and tenements from every American family and child.
John L. Lewis backed Republican Thomas E. Dewey and urged a vote on November 2 to allow miners to participate. A special committee criticized Truman and urged defeating opponents while supporting “true friends” in the UMWA, though acceptance was not unanimous.
New York Governor Dewey urged a joint effort by labor industry lending institutions and government to tackle housing shortages. He said as many as 1.5 million veterans and families have doubled up and pressed for realistic federal support to state programs and slum clearance while avoiding broad theory. He did not mention the Taft Ellender Wagner bill but endorsed parts of it.
Twelve planes will fly over the city at noon tomorrow dropping Red Feathers with theatre tickets attached. Ed Molden chairs a drive to raise 35000 for eight organizations, launching with a 630 tonight dinner at the George Washington hotel and a 730 radio program.
At the Philadelphia biennial convention the United Lutheran Church in America urged a program to curb hysteria over U S Russia tensions. The board of social missions called for challenging war talk, engaging lawmakers, building federal democratic cooperation, and daily prayer for leaders to follow God’s will. Police report a United States Air Force auxiliary fuel tank from an F-80 was found five miles west of Strasburg near North Mountain. The tank’s discovery followed aerial and foot searches after reports of a jet dropping fuel near 9 25 a m about 30 miles west of rent Royal. The F 80 was en route from Ashington to Illinois in bad weather at 2500 feet when the tank was released.
A crowd over 15000 expected in Charlottesville for the Virginia versus George Washington game. Frederick County schools approve bus trips with 35 students from Middletown under chaperones Mr and Mrs J C Gordon. Stonewall pupils include 22 boys led by Principal Bryant Harper. Nearby towns Stephens City Gore and Gainesboro also expected.
General Electric Co. was convicted in New York federal court of conspiring between 1927 and 1940 to monopolize trade in hard metal compositions and products in the United States and abroad. Two affiliates and three officials were also convicted. They face fines up to 25,000 each and possible imprisonment up to five years for individuals.
Handley high school meets the strong Lexington eleven in Winchester at 2 30 pm as district contenders visit the Judges. Lexington boosted by a 13 6 win over Covington high school brings a triple threat back Pooley Hubert Jr and quarterback Teddy Keller to test Handley with a fast passing attack and a stout line.
Gov Tuck introduces States Rights presidential hopeful J Strom Thurmond to a Richmond fair grounds crowd praising his wartime record and leadership while steering clear of endorsing Thurmond’s candidacy. Thurmond blasts civil rights programs as threats to liberty and vows to oppose what he calls political expediency.

Cleveland lefty Gene Bearden pitched a 2-0 shutout of the Boston Braves, scattering five hits to give the Indians a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Bearden and rookie Vern Bickford matched zeroes through nine innings as Bearden drove in a run with a second inning double and Bearden’s glovework anchored the staff in 96 minutes of play.
A cohort of American University graduate students will study Moorefield West Virginia for a year to test sociological methods. They will examine transport water facilities telephone service streets churches banks newspapers housing sanitation health tax structures and local resources. The project costs about 30000 dollars funded by a university grant.
In Detroit a sidewalk birth occurred when Mrs. Pearl Toombs collapsed on a street corner. Police sergeants Edgar Smuck and John Morrissey and patrolmen John Long and Albin Kosmowski formed a bed with their coats and helped deliver a girl weighing six pounds before hospital transfer.
President Truman spoke from his campaign train in Albany to an estimated 15,000 cheering supporters amid rain. He urged voters to retain the Democratic administration and attacked the Republican stance as favoring the rich. Mayor Erastus Corning and Senator Peter Dallesandro attended.
Teachers from Handley school led by C D Bennett and Mrs Helen Walker attend a District 6 Virginia Education Assn session at Wilson Memorial high school near Fisherville. Winchester elementary reps Dora Brill and Lola Moore join, with Stephens City high school sending the largest county delegation led by Paul Beable.
John L. Lewis outlined a forthcoming share the work plan for lean years to United Mine Workers delegates in Cincinnati. He said stabilization could be extended if depressions threaten contracts, noting no national leadership in bituminous fields. He warned the plan serves both workers and investors and could be adopted next year if hard times return.
Garland R. Quarles triggered a surprise alarm at Handley, evacuating 1188 pupils in 3 minutes 35 seconds. Deputy State Fire Marshal A J Bell observed during Fire Prevention Week observances. Similar drills took place at Miller School and Stephens City under Bernard Groves and John Boyd.
A Crossley poll shows California favoring Dewey with 55 percent of the two party vote versus Truman 45, while Arizona leans Truman and Nevada narrows. Colorado splits evenly, and Utah Wyoming Colorado show closer division than in earlier elections, with a third poll planned.
Argentine delegate Bramuglia met Andrei Vishinsky of Russia in Paris amid Security Council efforts to mediate the Berlin standoff. Smaller powers backed mediation while big powers debated a possible three month truce lifting the Berlin blockade. The Assembly also moved toward electing Cuba Egypt and Norway to two year Security Council terms starting Jan. 1.
