The Winchester School Board learned two months into the 1975 76 year that unbudgeted expenses could reach about 90000 dollars. Finance chairman Edward Whittle cited a recent five percent cut in state appropriations as a contributing factor.
Christopher Robert Good 19 of Liberty Ave was convicted of assault and battery against Handley teacher James N. Dickson III after a Sept 16 incident at 9 10 a m on Handley Blvd. He received 30 days in jail with 20 suspended, 10 to be served on weekends, and a $100 fine suspended. He was acquitted of assault and battery against a Handley student from a Sept 12 pep rally.
Washington lawmakers debate President Ford's 28 billion dollar tax cut plan linked to spending reductions. House Ways and Means aims to approve 12 billion for individuals and 2 to 3 billion for corporations, while Democrats question feasibility and seek defense and foreign aid cuts.
Local governments and schools in the Lord Fairfax planning district scramble as a near one million dollar federal employment program deadline approaches. Frederick County may skip the application while Clarke and Warren counties weigh plans. Nine requests totaling about 160000 arrive to date. larger requests expected before tomorrow’s cutoff.
A four day strike by Kansas City firefighters ended as 59 discharged members were rehired and the union agreed to help investigate suspected arson. Mayor Wheeler and officials had accused Local 42 of setting fires during the walkout. union spokesmen denied the claims. Firefighters began returning to duty as talks continued on pay parity with police.
A missing 18 month old German Shepherd Rex sparked fears of widespread dog theft. Clark County SPCA head Mrs. Leon Warner reports 343 missing dogs across Clarke Frederick and Warren counties in 20 months, with only 25 percent recovered. Authorities including state police are investigating escalating dog larceny as a national issue.
