Writ Denied in Pingley Slaying Case at Richmond
The Supreme Court of Appeals in Richmond Va denied a writ of error for George W Pingley 45 year old Frederick County mountaineer condemned to die in the electric chair October 14 for slaying Sheriff J W Newcome. The ruling leaves Pingley with no recourse but executive clemency unless his attorney Charles Curry of Staunton Va applies again. The February 13 shooting occurred as the sheriff tried to arrest Pingley on a charge of selling sheep under lien. State officer George Miller was critically wounded and a Winchester police officer unarmed Ed win Smith escaped. Pingley was later arrested by a posse and brought before a Winchester circuit court on April 11.
