Braddock Street Church welcomed a sizable assembly of ministers and laymen for a regional gathering. Church leaders urged renewed community service and strengthened interdenominational ties during the event.
Bishop W F McMurry opened the Baltimore Conference in Braddock Street Church marking the 148th session. William G Hardy presented a gavel carved from wood of the old Baltimore church. The gathering will adjourn October 10 after pastoral appointments for 220 ministers are announced.
Rev Dr E V Regester a noted Baltimore Conference Methodist clergyman was injured when his Ford sedan skidded and overturned near Millwood Clarke county as he traveled from Del Ray to Braddock Street Church South for the conference opening. His companion W B Lunsford escaped injury. Regester suffered head and body lacerations but colleagues say condition not serious.
The Civic League resumes after summer suspension with a 3 30 p m meeting this Friday at Mrs. Melvin Green's residence on South Washington Street. Members are urged to attend to outline the upcoming season's program.
Blue Ridge Transportation Company received the Bus Maintenance Prize for best maintenance among 29 large operators. F. J. Moore and A. F. MacDonald accepted in Chicago on September 29. The award includes a bronze plaque and $250 from McGraw Hill. The company counts 26 routes serving 170 communities and 52 buses covering 6 078 miles daily with 2 317 413 miles and 537 615 passengers in the year to June 30 1932.
There was strong demand for apples from the Britannic cargo in the Liverpool market per G R Cooper Harnden and Company. Prices in shillings varied by variety with Jonathan mostly 30 to 33 and Yorks 27 to 32, plus totals of shipments from New York to British ports for the week ending October 1 reaching 48 353 barrels, 17 826 boxes, 8 938 baskets.

Strong demand mentioned for Jonathan and other varieties with regional retentions and retuning state prices.

Maj. A Willis Robertson Democratic candidate for Congress attacked the Republican tariff as driving farmers toward bankruptcy. He said Hoover tariffs and foreign securities schemes harmed Virginia apples and small investors. He organized two clubs and delivered the principal speech at the courthouse in Harrisonburg noting the nation stands at an economic cross roads.

Edwin F. Hill of Washington D C is appointed Kiwanis International publicity chairman for about 1900 clubs in the United States and Canada by Carl E Endicott. Hill, a Washington club president and Virginia native, has long served in Kiwanis education and publicity roles in the Capital district and West Virginia.
The Retail Grocers Association announces a free cooking school at Rouss Hall for housewives in Winchester and vicinity. From Tuesday October 11 to Friday 2 4 p m daily, Mrs M A Rich of Baltimore will conduct demonstrations and instruction without any sales.
An advertisement touts the Philco radio at 18.75 dollars comparing it with radios once selling for over 100 dollars. It invites customers to hear the New Philco Jr. in Miller & Anderson showrooms and notes other local promos at Moling and Cather's.
President Hoover, after a Des Moines stop, resumes a campaign offensive through Indiana and Ohio. He denounces Democratic policies as wrecking recovery and outlines twelve Republican proposals to aid agriculture, land banks, tariffs, and foreign markets.
Former Representative J A Garber of Harrisonburg nominated by Republicans to run for Congress will speak in Winchester late October. A big rally is planned at the Colonial Theatre with headquarters at 274% North Loudoun Street. Garber says he is pleased with local sentiment and campaigns across the enlarged district of 20 counties and cities.
J. E. Morehouse, once a prominent figure in New York and Detroit’s motor car industry, was found dead in a Chicago loop hotel with a bullet in his head. A note claimed he was “another victim of the depression” and 48 cents was left on the dresser, the only money he had with him.
The Elk Grove Hotel at Bloomsburg burned last night destroying the hunter and fisherman stopping place. It housed 100 guests and was owned by Mrs William Perry and operated by Guy Covert of Baltimore. Replacement value estimated at 15000 dollars.
