The Huskies powered by injured players take an early lead but the Yankees from St. Louis respond with three runs in the first inning. Rain threatens Gotham as attendance at the stadium trails the opener.
In Yankee Stadium on October 5 the Yankees lost to the St. Louis Cardinals as Babe Ruth hit a first inning homer and Gehrig added a long blast. Pitras started for New York against Peters Alexander for St Louis as weather and attendance affected the mood for game two.
George Beban, prominent motion picture character actor from the stage, died in a Los Angeles hospital from injuries suffered when thrown from a horse Sunday. Beban was known for Latin role portrayals on the screen.
Notice from H Russell Potts and H Clay Manuel invites all past show participants to be present for rehearsals each night at 8 p m in Friendship Hall. Interested others are urged to attend as well to join rehearsals.
Lost River West Virginia October 5 The da rling and nerve of Kirby Dellinger leader of the gang which held up the Mount Jackson National Bank on July 27 1927 and escaped to the mountains with about $2000 in loot was seen when he drove a motorcycle into Lost City for a brief visit and escaped before officers could nab him. Dellinger a former mail clerk and Shenandoah county Virginia native with Cecil Wilson Helen Blackwell and Bettie Wilson staged one of the most spectacular hold ups in Virginia history. The quartet drove to the bank in the heart of Mount Jacksons business district and held up three employees while Wilson stood near the door with an automobile ready for the getaway. Wilson later surrendered to Washington authorities and was brought back to Shenandoah for trial. He claimed he was kidnapped by Dellinger and the girls but a Shenandoah county jury convicted him quickly with one minute in jail and a $5 fine. No trace of the girls has been found and this is the first news of Dellinger since his mountain escape.
Last night at the Colonial Theatre Panjab delighted a capacity audience with magician Huber who pulled rabbits from pockets exposing Hindoo fakir tricks. A new program includes The Cheer Leader showing today on stage and screen.
Registration ends at midnight Saturday for the November 6 presidential election. New voters 21 or older who have paid poll taxes must still register or transfer before tomorrow night. Books are open for unregistered residents to apply and for corrections.
The management announced today that Radio Shop will broadcast the World Series baseball games daily and invites everyone to listen for the returns.

William Randolph Hearst returning from London on the Berengaria said he is inclined to favor Herbert Hoover for President as a continuation of the current administrative system. He added he is not opposed to Governor Smith but supports the present administration’s policies.
The House campaign funds investigating committee rejected a motion by Representative Black to inquire into Mrs. Mabel Willebrandt's activities for Herbert Hoover's presidential campaign and reports on a whispering campaign against Governor Smith.
Beech a discharged printer at Kilpatrick's printing shop in Lawrenceville was shot five times by Beech after a confrontation around three in the morning. Beech attempted suicide after the shooting but survived.
In New York on October 5 the stock market opened strong with many issues hitting high records but a heavy weekend profit taking cooled the session. A drop in call money from 7 to 6 percent and news of another $5,000,000 in gold imports checked the selling pressure.

The District Nurse Association met with members listing 1 377 visits in summer months from three clinics two tuberculosis and one orthopedic. Nurses averaged 15 daily visits last month and 33 patients were examined at a September chest clinic with six positive and six suspicious results. Officers elected include Mrs H D Fuller president and Mrs Clarence Hardy first vice president.
Sale commissioners announced that the auction of Chiles property grossed 38175. Auctioneers A G Swanson and Coleman Dunn conducted the sale. Miss Bertie Osburn bought the 20 acre homeplace including Battlefield Inn for 13200. Other sales included W A Bailey paying 7500 for 18 acres of apple orchard plus 1900 for a tenant house and land. Leonard Orndorff acquired the old Savage distillery property with 16 acres for 5000. W N Mason bought the Steele house with two acres for 1825. Harry Steele bought two tracts totaling nine acres for 1650. Remaining lots sold to Scott Grant and others for 300 to 900 each.

Officials of the Virginia State Commission on Conservation and Development say 330000 acres of Blue Ridge land will be acquired within a year to form a national park. Plans include county by county machinery to buy land in state name and deed to federal government. Private deals preferred. condemnation only if terms fail. Conference at Skyland discusses funds and leadership with notable figures including Dr. Frank Bohxy and W. Davis Conrad.
Last night at Friendship Hall the first rehearsal of Sarah Zane to Friendship Companys show drew over 100 cast members. Parlett Producing Company of Baltimore will produce and stage The Main Street Follies with two parts a Ministrés Show and a Revue. Director Parlett praises the town talent and invites more participants as rehearsals continue.

A dispatch from Louis to Rio Times-Dispatch quotes Representative L. C. Dyer of Missouri's 12th District arguing for enforcement acts for the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. He recalls 1928 anti lynching legislation failing in the Senate, saying Hoover could split the South to influence November, and urges enforcement of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments while opposing prohibition and seeking enforcement of the eighteenth amendment. A Democratic rally will be held at Bryarly school house on October 15 at 8 p m. Speakers include W W Glass of Winches and Hunter Hughes of Albin. The public is invited to attend to hear these two well known speakers.
Special services will be held at the Pressbyterian Church this evening at 7 o clock conducted by Rev Dr F T McFaden. The service is preparatory to the communion service to be held one morning next. Presbyterians are urged to attend these preparatory services despite busy times to show gratitude for both material and spiritual blessings.
