The Labor Department reports a 1.4 percent September rise in the Producer Price Index the largest monthly increase in nearly five years driven by higher fuel and beef and veal costs. Energy goods surged 6.8 percent, food items rose 1.8 percent, and nonfood items gained 1.3 percent.
Washington AP reports the Agriculture Department says the Soviet Union may buy up to 25 million metric tons of wheat and corn in the coming year, 60 percent above 1978 79 purchases, potentially about 10 percent of U S output. Undersecretary Dale Hathaway notes actual purchases will depend on need and agreement terms. The talks, held twice yearly, did not cover SALT II or Cuba.
