The Cincinnati outfit scores first in the fourth inning in a classy exhibition as New York opens the 1939 classic with an early lead.
Charley Keller triple and Bill Dickey single drive a 2 1 victory for the World Champion Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of the 1939 World Series at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio drew a walk passed in the ninth, and the Reds struggled in a tense pitching duel before 50 000 fans.

The body of Conley D. Dean, 23, of 1308 South Boulevard, Charlotte, N C, killed when tractor rear wheels ran over him on Route 50 near Paris, Va, was moved from Jones Funeral Home to Monroe, N C, for services tomorrow. The truck owned by Lance Inc of Charlotte overheated its emergency brake after air brakes failed, causing a fire as the truck descended a mountain. Clifton A Chaney of Charlotte said Dean, his helper, jumped from the cab and was struck. The truck was under control at about 10 miles per hour when the mishap occurred. A separate notice asks for a home for a female terrier puppy.
In Roanoke on October 4, about 500 Methodist laymen and ministers gathered to dissolve the Baltimore Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. They planned memorials and ordination services, plus resolutions sending ministers to new conferences at the final meeting Thursday morning. The session also retired six pastors, advanced several ministers on trial, and elected deacons and elders while noting superannuations.
The Whirley drunken driving case moves toward the jury in Corporation Court. Mayor Anderson testified that Whirley denied prior drunken driving convictions when first questioned on the stand during the earlier trial.
Senator Vandenberg urged the Senate to oppose revising the neutrality law as administration efforts to repeal the arms embargo aim to aid one belligerent. Miss Katherine Kreamer 22 of Washington died at St Agnes Hospital five hours after a crash on the road near Rolling Road. James J Carr 21, the driver, was treated at the hospital and later to the station. Police said a hearing on causing her death was held tonight.

Paris authorities arrested two people and opened inquiries against 29 others over an appeal for immediate peace. The move follows a German Soviet peace offer tied to Poland’s partition. The cabinet vowed stronger credits to aid the Reich and cited a new political group.
Berlin dispatch reports informants say Chamberlain’s speech failed to clarify the Moscow peace gesture and Hitler expects a clear reply. Nazi circles foresee Hitler addressing the Reichstag late in the week after reviewing Britain’s stance and awaiting reaction from Moscow and allied powers.
Paris dispatch reports Premier Daladier telling the foreign affairs committee France will continue the war imposed upon it. Daladier said France would stand with dictated peace for all nations, echoing Prime Minister Chamberlain’s Commons statement.
