Mexican troops recovered victims from mud and buried many in mass graves after 100 mph winds hit the Baja California peninsula. Officials fear deaths could reach 1,000 as aid efforts begin with airlifts of food blankets and medicine and Navy delivery.
The State Board of Elections seeks Virginia Supreme Court intervention to overturn a Fairfax Circuit Court ruling that directed Fairfax County Fairfax City and Falls Church to use a different ballot name pattern. The board argues state law requires adherence to its pattern to ensure uniform presidential and congressional ballots across Virginia. Deputy Atty. Gen. Anthony F. Troy says a ruling could prevent numerous suits and varied ballot layouts.
The 94th Congress ends its 1976 session after a year of tax cuts investigations and veto battles. The House adjourned at 1 36 a.m. EDT and the Senate at 2 51 a.m. amid late hour tensions and a threatened quorum arrest. The group passed a 19 billion tax cut and spotlighted intelligence agency inquiries. A Senate filibuster halted a Clean Air Bill on final day.
Watergate prosecutor Charles Ruff will announce no charges against President Ford or others after reviewing contributions to Ford from two maritime unions. West Germany faces a tight vote as Social Democrat Helmut Schmidt and Christian Democrat Helmut Kohl trade bitter rhetoric after a lengthy Bonn TV debate. The four-way race featured attacks on domestic policy with little on future proposals. Unemployment stood at 3.9 percent, about 899000 people. Campaigning ends before Sunday, with rallies in Bonn and Essen.
President Ford reprimanded Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz for racist comments and urged him to resign or be fired. Lawmakers from both parties condemned the remarks made after the Republican convention and Dean Rolling Stone claims. Butz apologized saying he intended no disrespect.
Gov Mills Godwin asked U S Transportation Secretary William Coleman to approve a reduced four lane I 66 corridor from the Capital Beltway to the Potomac River to fix congestion. The plan envisions Metro use of the median, with buses and car pools during rush hour and bike trails, plus better access to Dulles Airport.
