The U S Command reports 95 Americans killed in the week ending last Saturday, down from 135 the prior week and the lowest since August 12, 1967. South Vietnamese casualties rose to 308 while American wounded climbed to 1,315. enemy deaths fell to 2,382.
Saigon Ambassador Lam urged direct talks with the Republic of Vietnam government at the peace table. He reiterated July 11 offer for new elections with Viet Cong participation to let South Vietnamese express aspirations. U S Ambassador Lodge accused Hanoi and the Viet Cong of refusing to deal with the elected government and urged meaningful negotiations.
Eva Page Locke, nearing 87, recalls collecting Tobacco Worms for her father as a girl. She and daughter Marion Locke reside at 371 Kern St, sharing memories of the green Hickory Horned Devil seen in The Star.
Howard Milton Reid, 24, of 627 Ross St., injured in a crash on Route 50 West near the Truck Stop at 1:50 a.m. He faces auto larceny and traffic charges after allegedly stealing a 1964 Pontiac convertible owned by Richard Dallas Hollar on Cork Street. Reid is held on $1,000 bond for auto larceny and about $150 for traffic counts.
A West Virginia man, Thomas William Puffinberger, 36, of Ridge, Morgan County, was fatally shot in the back while hunting on Timber Ridge off Route 522 north in Frederick County. Stotler’s rifle discharged after striking a tree limb, the bullet entering Puffinberger’s back and exiting the chest. He died at Winchester Memorial Hospital about 6 p.m. The Worcester Volunteer Rescue Squad transported him. Puffinberger was unmarried and lived with his father.
White House sources say FBI Director J Edgar Hoover will not retire on his 75th birthday January 1. Hoover has headed the FBI since 1924 and says he has no ambition but to remain in his post as long as health and mind permit.
A Senate subcommittee led by Abraham Ribicoff probes illegal activities by top sergeants running noncommissioned officer clubs from Germany to Vietnam and Ft. Benning Georgia. Witnesses allege a transfer pattern to shade profits with upriver payoffs tied to the 24th Infantry division and Maj. Gen. William Cunningham. Cunningham denies failure to act while acknowledging mismanagement.
The AFL-CIO opens its convention with a plan to expel the International Chemical Workers Union and raise annual dues by 4.6 million dollars for about 13 million members across 121 unions. The move follows Walter Reuther’s UAW withdrawal and a related leadership clash with President George Meany.
