Over 65 000 fans jam Yankee Stadium for the opening of the baseball classic. The scene centers on New York as the series begins amid home crowd fervor and pageantry.
New York Yankees and St Louis Cardinals attracted a record crowd for the first game of baseballs world championship. Ruth and Douthit sparked early action as both teams tallied in the first inning amid rain threats and breezy, overcast skies at Yankee Stadium.
Andrew Bell of the Chamber of Commerce aims to raise 54 dollars to complete a 1007 dollar regional aid quota for the Robert Conrad Post American Legion’s eight floats for Virginia’s Sesqui-Centennial Day at the Philadelphia exposition on October 12. Mrs Annie E B Larrick widow of Asa Larrick died suddenly at 4 PM yesterday at 702 Berryville Ave from heart disease. Surviving are two sons William and J Walter Larrick of Highview two daughters Martha A Larrick and Maggie Fletcher one sister and two brothers. Funeral services announced with rites at Timber Ridge Christian Church conducted by Rev Rohart and Rev Courtney Anderson.

A French passenger plane bound for Croydon crashed near Penshurst Kent today. Five passengers the pilot and a mechanic were burned to death as the craft went down in an open field.
The People's Drug Co announces it will refrain from dispensing soda fountain items on Sundays and will open every sixth Sunday only to dispense necessary drive beverages if the city ordinance allowing Sunday soft drink sales is approved. C A Davis, Manager.

Charles J Kiger former Winchester resident and McKesson Robbins vice president died suddenly at French Lick Springs Indiana while attending the National Association of Wholesale Druggists convention. The body was taken to Paducah Kentucky for burial. He was about 54 and survived by his widow and one son. His brother John J Kiger of Alexandria is the only surviving sibling.
In police court Alonzo Parson, 24, was jailed three months and fined 113 dollars for illegal possession of liquor after officers found two and a half gallons of moonshine in a keg near his South Loudoun street apartment and two pints in his room. Perry Parson and Sanders Pangle also faced fines, with Pangle receiving extra jail time for breaching a suspended sentence.

Autopsy to determine if Danko was killed by a companion or by foul play. General alarm broadcast for Leo Brown of Pittsburgh as authorities press identifications.
New York stocks opened strong with brisk buying in high priced industrials but fell back as selling pressured the market. An irregular recovery followed and the close was steady as about 1,000,000 shares changed hands.
Lady Nancy Astor of Virginia made a five thousand dollar gift to the University of Virginia for building tennis courts. The donation came as she prepared to travel to Washington and New York en route to Europe, after visiting her sister Mrs Ronald Tree at Albemarle.
The New Britain, an American ship, arrived at Charleston under escort by the guard cutter Seneca after burning off the coast. A radio message from the Seneca to the local naval station reported the ship reached the port about 6 30 in the morning.
