Kiev battle rages with massive German and Russian forces along the Dnieper. German troops hold the ancient fortress city on the river cliffs while Allied and German units pour artillery infantry and air power into the fight for mastery of the line.
Ottawa reports the Canadian destroyer St Croix torpedoed and sunk on convoy duty with 146 men dead and one survivor. The loss marks the fourth Canadian destroyer sunk and the first of seven former U S vessels allotted to Canada to go down since the war began.
Stockholm reports broadcasts from the German Atlantic station saying Hitler ordered a Russian front stand on the Dnieper and told generals not another foot of ground beyond the river should be yielded. He declared the Dnieper will be the natural front and that this front will stand.
Reading the Soviet and German reports the struggle across the Dnieper bend intensifies with fierce Russian attacks south of the river and Berlin claims of a pivotal battle in the Zaporozhe Melitopol area. Despite German defense gains a Berlin broadcast notes limited Soviet bridgeheads and ongoing heavy combat as rail junctions and fronts remain contested.
The Postoffice reports Christmas parcels for men overseas exceed the limits and cannot be accepted. Packages must be at most 15 inches long with length plus girth not over 36 inches and weigh no more than 5 pounds. From now until October 15 non inflammable items may be sent without a stamped authorization.
Allied troops enter Naples and strike around Mount Vesuvius while capturing Avelino East. Germans pull back toward a Rome line as Kiev battles intensify fog and rain with mass artillery. In Corporation Court Judge Harrison ordered Vallie Jenkins released after expert testimony from Staunton and Marion hospital superintendents and Dr H I Pifer, finding she was not insane and not guilty of felonious assault with intent to kill.
Roanoke officials report the executive committee of the Women's Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America met to finalize plans for the 12th convention. The event starts tomorrow morning and runs through Tuesday noon.
Effective Monday October 4 at 12:01 a m all apples below U S No 1 grade must be sent to plants except certain varieties. Delicious McIntosh Lady and Crab apples are exempt from War Food Administration Order 83 signed today. Carl G Wooster chief for WFA Fresh Fruits and Vegetables will be administrator of Order 83 with local deputies to grant releases for shipment.
Swiss army communique reports American flying fortresses engaged German fighters over eastern Switzerland at midday. One fortress was downed by anti aircraft fire. bombs caused material damage in several areas while air alarms echoed in multiple localities.

C W Lowe was released from the local jail after Maryland authorities instructed. He had been jailed for unlawfully obtaining seven cows valued at 1302.50 from Henry H Carter of Montgomery county. The warrant, issued Sept 13 1943, cited false pretenses by a bank check.
The Third War Loan total for Winchester and Frederick County stands at 1 263 258 75 with indications the quota of 1 300 000 will be oversubscribed. The Kiwanis raised 257 500 in a single day but 60 000 was new. 226 E bonds were sold with average near 100 dollars. The United States Navy Band comes to Winchester for an over the top dance at the armory tomorrow night at 9.00 p.m. Meals and lodging details are arranged through local hosts and Red Cross.
Washington reports a purely academic debate on drafting fathers as Selective Service letters go out to former 3-As. Senators Bailey and Clark propose stripping federal pay of nonfathers militarily useful. Bailey is unsure it would yield more than 15 000 troops and not replace 446 000 needed. Allied forces under Lt General Mark W. Clark capture Naples, Italy, clearing German resistance and enabling a major buildup for future operations. The port city, with 925,000 residents, is taken in 23 days as fighters push toward Rome.
President Roosevelt nominated W Averell Harriman to be ambassador to Russia to succeed Admiral Standley who returned to report on Soviet attitudes. Harriman, 52, has led lease administration in London since 1941 and has long been involved in lend lease duties and Roosevelt Churchill conferences.
Washington reports the Navy has the greatest fleet in world history as United Nations sea power dominates. Allied fleets, aided by Italy and French repairs, far exceed Japan and Germany in combined strength. Germany anticipated a blockade but was limited by resource access.
Virginia exceeded its quota in the Third War Loan campaign, announced by J Joseph May executive manager of the Virginia War Finance committee. He cited Federal Reserve Bank reports through September 30 showing state sales of 152 915 689 25, with only 85 000 remaining to reach the goal.
Lt. John S. Rockwell Jr. arrives home from North Africa after 18 months in patrol duty off Iceland and in the North African area. He is a son of Mr and Mrs John S Rockwell of 1220 Valley Avenue and will visit his parents, Mr and Mrs L H Cheshire of Romney West Virginia.
