A crowd of 33 000 filled Shibe Park to near capacity as the World Ball Classic opened with a victorious showing by the Athletics against Richmond. Adlwalee led the effort amid a spirited near-capacity turnout.
Lefty Grove starts for the Athletics as Philadelphia faces St. Louis in the opening game before about 33 000 fans including President Hoover. Connie Mack and Gabby Street greet Hoover in the presidential box as both lineups take the field for the start of the Series.
Max Bishop snuffs a potential Card rally with a sensational seventh inning catch as two men aboard. Al Simmons, Athletics left fielder, belted the first homer of the 1930 World Series in the fourth, deep center to knot the game at 2-all.
In a broadcast era report the game shows a scoreless first inning for both the Cardinals and Athletics with no hits. In the second inning Foxx gains a two base hit and scores on a Blades error as Miller drives in a sacrifice fly for the Athletics.
In a tight game the Cardinals load the bases on Mancuso Gelbert and Grimes hits in the first inning scoring two. Simmons homered for the Athletics in the fourth as Cochrane added a late homer but Cardinals win edge remains.
Marshall Brill, son of Mr and Mrs Elijah Brill of East Leicester Street, remained in serious condition at Memorial Hospital after being struck and dragged 20 to 25 feet by Henry Lewis’s car near the Leicester Street intersection. Lewis says he slowed for children playing in the street and that the boy twice ran into the road. the injuries include a badly lacerated face and multiple bruises with no marked improvement overnight.
A Corporation Court decree grants Mrs Justa L Conner an absolute divorce from Luther T Conner for desertion of over three years. The prior March 19 1928 partial divorce is merged into the final decree, with property rights preserved. Mrs Conner was born Justa Prince in the city.
John Harmer filed a report at the county clerk's office about sedan grass on his farm southeast of Winchester. The grass reached 5 1 2 to 6 feet tall despite a long drought, while his millet seed failed due to the lack of rainfall.

Richmond reports a state inquiry chaired by Frank Bane investigates claims of criminal negligence and incompetency in the death of Percy Tilton Willcox, a 32 year old patient at Eastern State Hospital. The panel includes Shirley Carter Col King Harman E C Palmer Senator S L of Appomattox and Dr Beverley R Tucker. The board heard testimony from attendants physicians and the Commonwealth's Attorney and planned to continue Thursday morning.
In Cartersville Georgia a motorcade of 45 to 50 masked men dragged John Will Clark from jail and hanged him at a fairgrounds crossbeam. Clark accused of murdering Chief Jenkins after a September 5 confrontation. he had escaped custody earlier and allegedly confessed to the homicide though claiming accident. National guards were called after a prior lynching attempt.

Mulligan a Palisade N J lawyer real estate man and former Bronx operator He died at his home 49 Bluff Road after a long illness aged 68 Born in Exeter N Y he attended Hamilton College and New York University Law School later practicing law and focusing on real estate before moving to Palisade fourteen years ago He and his wife a fellow lawyer headed a Palisade Gardens Inc firm until his death.
Audley Farms of Clarke County won first in the fourth race at Havre De Grace yesterday. Don Amore with jockey E Wetters led the field in a race for three year olds and up, with the winner’s purse valued at 950 dollars.
Virginia State Police officer Maynard Bayliss searched for four negro men in a Maryland tagged car after it stopped and robbed several vehicles on the Northwestern Grade near Capon Bridge. The quartet is also accused of attempting to short-change multiple filling stations between town and Capon Bridge, with victims not yet identified.
Funeral services for Bes sie E Brumback wife of J W Brumback farmer of Middletown Va were conducted at the family home three miles west of Middletown by Rev J T Power of Martinsburg with interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery She was a Primitive Baptist Church member and is survived by her husband son Byron a sister Anna Koontz of Illinois and four brothers all of Page County Va

A Rappahannock county jury ruled that a worker who tampers with explosives while off his regular duties cannot collect damages from his employer. Roy Legge, a laborer for the Virginia State Highway Department, was injured when dynamite caps exploded after he tested one on an anvil. The court found Legge's own negligence caused the injury and awarded no damages.
Hospital reports no change in Raymond L. Bowley 20 son of Mr and Mrs A Wallace Bowley who remains unconscious from a severe head injury after an early Tuesday crash north of the city. Doctors call the brain concussion critical and say the course of the case may hinge on Bowley’s condition. Separate notes mention Vincent Hollis 18 Handley High School senior recovering from leg injuries, and police court delays for E C Johnson and George Snyder pending Bowley’s status.
The October term of Frederick County Circuit Court opens Monday with a grand jury to hear cases likely to yield indictments. Russell Copeland, in jail on a forgery accusation, allegedly forged a Stephens City resident’s name on a check. Copeland, previously acquitted of a murder charge, faces new legal trouble alongside Odie Bennett Baker Line Hunter Nelson and others amid alcohol and prohibition related cases. Civil matters also fill the docket as county citizens and local defendants await grand jury action.
Danville Sept 30 injunctions issued by Judges Clement and Leigh restrain picketing near Riverside and Dan River mills until Dec 1. The move targets Francis J. Gorman and others guarding entry and exit, while union leaders say the order won’t halt peaceful picketing. About 4,000 union members remain on strike.
Henry Siwinski, 22, was arrested at his Chicago home by a task force from Bend Indiana investigating Waltman South Bend girl’s murder. He admitted being in South Bend at the time but denied knowing the victim and signed an extradition waiver. The victim, Miss Woltman, was found with her throat cut in bed, as three other children slept nearby.
