Allied headquarters report the British Eighth Army breached the German winter defense on the Adriatic end of the Italian front, advancing four miles from the Sangro river and capturing Mezzagrogna. U S Fifth Army troops moved one mile, seizing Casovo as bridgeheads expand along the Sangro.
Postmaster general Frank C. as Washington urges the public to mail Christmas parcels letters and cards immediately to avoid a holiday jam. He notes shopping is active yet mail volume is far below needed and delivery by Christmas will be impossible if a last minute surge arrives.
Stockholm reports a German foreign office spokesman dismissing peace rumors as ridiculous while Munich papers warn the end may come soon but with a terrible final round. Swedish correspondents cite beliefs Berlin faces intensified bombings and consider whether Hitler can continue without Berlin as Allied leaders pressured for evidence of wrecked Berlin.
A 20 page Allied pamphlet titled Women Under Axis Rule accuses German forces of forcing teenage girls into military brothels in occupied Poland and Luxembourg and of exploiting occupation areas in Greece. It cites forced pregnancies and illegitimate child payments as policy.

Henry Linnaugh age 36 sent regrets for missing a preliminary medical exam while listed 1-A as an army captain in Italy. Draft board chair noted it must be some mistake. Linnaugh has been overseas eighteen months.
County Treasurer Harry L. McCann announces all 1943 taxes are due. A 5 percent penalty will be added after December 5. Taxpayers should act promptly to avoid extra charges.
Russian armies advanced on six front sectors including White Russia and Ukraine converging on the Zhlobin rail hub northwest of Gomel. Red Army reports claim captures and villages as they press toward strategic bases with heavy German losses and retreats toward the Polish border. A Reuters note places further westward thrusts near Bobruisk and alongside the Gomel Minsk railway.
United War Fund total inches up only a few hundred dollars to about 17 775 51 in Winchester and Frederick county. RAF raids on Berlin damaged or destroyed ten embassies and legations last week. The affected sites were largely between the city center and west end, with the United States and French embassies among those reported flattened or burned. Other targeted sites included the German, Japanese, Swedish, Swiss, Turkish, and Danish legations and embassies at various addresses.
U S Eighth Air Force heavy bombers attacked targets in western Germany during daylight setting a record of 11 major raids in a month. They were supported by Allied fighters as they bombed Bremen for the second time in four days following Mosquito night raids.
Winchester and Frederick counties Blue Star Mothers near the $110,000 target with $87,399.75 in sales through November 27, representing 1 038 bonds. Wendell Barney, War Finance chair, notes payroll bonds due today and cites many sales outside Winchester. New York November 30 Japanese forces broke into the Hu nan city of Changteh under artillery and air bombardment. The Chinese communique reported they entered yesterday afternoon and that heavy street fighting and high casualties occurred on both sides. Chinese High Command said fresh troops were closing in as war planes aided defenders by sinking river craft and strafing concentrations.
Budapest dispatch reports 25,000 evacuated from Sofia with thousands more leaving to avoid anticipated Allied air raids.

A Foreign Office spokesman in Stockholm denounces rumors of German proposals as absolutely ridiculous. In Munich's Neueste Nachrichten the war's end is said to be not so far away and warns that final stages will be terrible.
Australian and South Pacific forces report capture of Sattelberg and advance toward Bonga in New Guinea jungle. Liberator bombers dropped 94 tons of explosives on Wewak, a northeast Japanese stronghold, amidst renewed allied pressure.
Yugoslav national liberation forces claim heavy Nazi losses as German drives into Hercegovina and Bosnia are checked. Croat units wipe out a German column on the Petnjigina road with 90 killed and 30 captured, while Romanians and partisans strike at isolated garrisons and ship traffic near Dalmatia.
Lt. Gen. Alexander A. Vandegrift is named commandant of the Marine Corps, to take effect January 1 in succession to Lt. Gen. Thomas Holcomb who retires at 64. Secretary Knox announced the appointment at a Marine Corps press conference, with Roosevelt asking Holcomb to stay until year’s end.
An AP dispatch from Paris and a Reuters report claim Roosevelt Churchill and Chiang Kai-Shek finished a Cairo conference and head for Iran to meet Stalin. The BBC and OWI noted the Reuters story circulated with London and Amsterdam datelines and was monitored by German broadcasts.
A Berlin broadcast claimed diplomatic circles expect a Churchill Roosevelt Stalin meeting at Teheran, with Roosevelt and Churchill possibly en route via Cairo and Ankara. It noted Steinhardt’s air arrival and Chiang Kai Shek’s shown presence in Iran, while suggesting Cairo or Alexandria as alternate venues. Churchill marked his 69th birthday working at No 10 with no London ceremonies.
