The Better Housing Campaign reports a running total of 31,482 from three days of canvassing with estimates rising daily for repairs and modernization. Large projects include converting a vacant West Boscawen street home into multiple apartments with plans estimated at about 3,000.
Senator H F Byrd received a radiogram from Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd at Little America via San Francisco. The message lauds Admiral Nalton and notes his return to Winchester to live on North Loudoun Street after retirement, praising his leadership and character.
Mrs Maria Virginia Haddox wife of Capt J Haddox died suddenly of heart trouble at 603 South Loudoun street. Born June 28 1856 in Shenandoah county she was a daughter of the late Upton Collins and Amanda McDonald. Survived by husband two daughters a son and a sister the funeral at 2 pm from the Loudoun Monmouth street home with Rev E T Clark officiating. Interment Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers named.
Susie Rebecca Green died at age 50 at her daughter Lethia Cook's home in Millwood. She leaves husband Robert Green, father George Cook, five daughters, two sons, four sisters, nine half siblings, and 13 grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at 2 PM at Gillfield Church Millwood with Revs Ford and Allen Williams. burial in Millwood colored cemetery.
Federal agents Cowley and Hollis were found to have acted with justification in fatally wounding George Baby Face Nelson after a gun battle at Barrington. The coroner's jury noted the agents died in the line of duty while pursuing Nelson and his companions.
Raleigh reports flood stage on streams from heavy Thanksgiving day rain. Water rose two feet above the Crabtree Creek bridge on U S Highway 1 between Raleigh and Wake Forest. Flood warnings issued for Neuse and Cape Fear rivers with Cape Fear near Fayetteville expected to overflow at 35 feet. Over five inches of rain fell in 24 hours.
Alabama was selected to play Stanford in the Rose Bowl football game in Pasadena on New Year's Day. The announcement comes from the Rose Bowl committee after the season ends.
A new booster tank increases the South End Hose Company fire truck water capacity to over 200 gallons by removing the chemical tank and tying the two tanks together. A bullet riddled tan Whippet was found by Officers Frank Ritter and Lloyd Williams. Charles Robinson of Warren County is held for investigation while Harvey Clark of the county is jailed for trial on a concealed weapon charge. Two sets of licenses Virginia 139440 and Maryland 327958 were found in the car. The incident occurred on Washington Street and may involve shots fired at Robinson's home near Reliance.

Two prisoners being moved from Paris to Chester penitentiary overpowered deputies near Richview at 4 30 a m and fled in the officers seven passenger sedan. Deputies Snider and Mitchell were robbed of weapons and money. The missing men are Nicholas Olfer alias John Daviduk 21 Roy Colter alias Culbert 23 and Alvin Taylor 22 who did not escape. A revolver was believed smuggled to the prisoners before departure.
Positive identification of Elmo J Noakes of Roseville California was announced by the state police. He and a woman were found shot near Altoona while three girls believed to be his daughters were found nearby. Authorities linked gun purchase in Altoona to the case and noted suffocation by external means as the official cause for the girl.

A three vehicle collision on Martinsburg Pike near the curve yesterday morning left Mrs Lee Smith of Altoona Pa and her small son injured. The accident involved two coal trucks driven by Russell Pownell and H M Gance of Romney along with Mr Smith's car. Mrs Smith and the child were treated at a local home and later taken to a hospital. Trial Justice A J Tavenner set a hearing for 10 o'clock tomorrow to determine fault.
Miss Barbour returns to York to preach at noon in the U B Church with Miss Garnet Hamrick giving an evening talk at 7 30 o clock. The Rev George W Stover leads both services as a young people choir performs. They spend Thanksgiving weekend with the Stover family before returning to New York.
Thanksgiving Day was quietly observed in Winchester with services at Christ Episcopal Church Loudoun Street Presby terian Church and Church of Sacred Heart. Dr William F Locke preached at a union service and mass was held at 8 o clock. In the afternoon Handley Judges defeated Martinsburg.
A telegram from Penns Grove New Jersey reports Mrs Amanda Rosenberger Pingley of Hayfield Virginia is critically ill after a stroke or paralysis. Her brothers and sisters including M H Rosenberger of Hayfield left to join her during this illness. She is a native of this county with many relatives awaiting word.
Public auction of live stock Tuesday at 11 a m on the R G Chapin farm three miles south Hayfield. Twenty six steers 700 850 lbs seven bred cows and heifers nine cows four with calves at side fourteen ewes. Terms cash. Dunn and Duvall as auctioneers.

A Buick stalled on the Norfolk and Western tracks at Gaylord Virginia as a northbound freight approached. Mr. Brown a paymaster for Midvale Steel and his wife Mrs Brown 61 of Philadelphia were dragged over 100 yards and killed. Their Thanksgiving visit with son Rutherford E Brown in New Market was thwarted. State police and railroad officials investigated the deadly crossing accident.
