Arthur Charles Mortimer dubbed a terrorman was convicted of murder in Winchester England for fatally run down cyclist Phyllis Mary Oakes with a stolen car. Oakes died August 11, just before her 21st birthday, after being dragged 40 yards. Mortimer, a six foot Lance Corporal at Alder Shot Barracks, claimed fits since boyhood and faced further alleged assaults on other girls.

Common Council approved a $300 street decoration plan to combat theft and boost Yuletide spirit. An ordinance to register all bicycles and curb theft passed first and second readings, while a speed fines ordinance failed 4 to 6.
An automobile driven by Louis Jenkins of 1751 T Street N E Washington DC went out of control on a curve west of Bluemont in Clarke county Wednesday evening. Jenkins was taken to Memorial Hospital for observation with possible concussion but not believed seriously hurt.
An auction is set for Saturday noon at the courthouse steps to sell a 42 by 108 foot residential lot on Amherst Street adjoining R Gray Williams and Roland Ryan. The lot fronts a 10 foot alley. Terms require one third cash with the balance paid in equal installments over one and two years. Dunn and Duvall are the auctioneers.
