Winds Bring Relief as California Fires Slow

Firefighters along a seven mile front in the Santa Monica mountains note shifting winds slow progress of two major fires. Ralph J. Scott says the worst may be over if winds stay favorable as 800 to 900 men hold lines near Mulholland Highway and in Rustic canyon.

Winchester urges care as winter bites city streets

MR WINCHESTER urges residents to feed birds and praises street workers for keeping roads open. The Street Department is commended for clearing ice and snow from gutters after snowfall, noting the extreme cold and difficult task.

Pingley Rites To Be Sunday

The body of George Pingley who died yesterday morning after the slaying of Sheriff J W Newcome is transported to Strasburg and will lie in state until Sunday for funeral services at Lebanon Lutheran Church. The service will be led by Rev Arthur Wake and Rev Harry Crim with burial in the Lebanon church cemetery. Pingley named 6 active and 19 honorary pallbearers and survives by wife Lillian Moore Pingley. two sons George Ray and Harry Stewart. two daughters Snelma Catherine and Lillie Virginia.

Slain Yonkers Clerk Found Dead in Grand Central Thriller

Marion Wheeler a 32 year old Yonkers clerk in L V Porter’s New York Central office was shot on the seventh floor of Grand Central Terminal as she fled a man identified as John McNeal a 52 year old Yonkers widower whom police say had pressed her for marriage. McNeal died from a self inflicted wound after firing three bullets into Wheeler. Police traced the assailant to a bitter argument aboard the elevator prior to the shooting which drew a crowd as the victim collapsed at her office entrance. He was later identified as the man who had harassed Wheeler the day before prompting coworkers to eject him.
