George Hawse was fatally injured and another person was hurt during a disturbance in Jersey City. Police and emergency crews responded to the scene as investigators gathered details and witnesses.
Frederick Palmer, famed war correspondent fresh from the Somme, will lecture at the Empire Theater on December 8 on The World's Greatest Battles The Somme and Verdun with moving pictures. Doctor Peter MacQueen speaks on Mexico on December 7 at the Auditorium City Hall. The Handley Board funds free lectures. Palmer's New York Carnegie Hall talk is a paid event.
The Women's Civic League schedules a 4 PM Friday session in City Hall council chamber urging full attendance. The agenda centers on addressing the Winchester dust nuisance highlighted by The Star editorial yesterday and plans a firm league stance.
An order from the Corporation Court of Winchester appoints A. H. Jackson to the City Public Schools Board from the old third ward to fill the unexpired term of Charles L. Robinson whose resignation was accepted. Robinson had been appointed for the late Major Holmes Conrad.

Horace Tabb of Martinsburg is profiled as the Cumberland division’s senior operator. He joined the service as a Messenger at Winchester in 1867, learned telegraphy, and became Martinsburg telegraph office operator in 1868, later rising to manager with a spotless service record.
The Commercial and Savings Bank, Winchester’s youngest financial institution, shows rapid growth less than nine months old with total resources approaching 250 000. Navy 2 percent Charles E Hughes Republican candidate for President sent to President Wilson a telegram congratulating him on his re election The message cited the close vote and California official count as basis for congratulations and best wishes for a successful administration. Wilcox says California canvass to date gives Wilson electors majority between 1200 and 3800 votes and no grounds for a recount. White House reported Wilson unaware of the telegram until return from theater with Mrs Wilson and no comment was issued.
