Mail pouches burned up in rail wreck
A broken switch frog caused a northbound Norfolk and Western passenger train wreck near Rippon in Jefferson county. The engine derailed and pulled the baggage mail and two passenger cars from the track, destroying all mail pouches and many parcels. A boy was hurt, and mail clerk Joseph Jolliffe was injured guiding mail as fire broke out. Passengers transferred to a southbound train to Shenandoah.

Negro Who Attacks Teacher Is Killed
In Welch West Virginia a jailed unidentified black man accused of attacking Miss Frances Grant a teacher was shot by Deputy Sheriff L J Tinsley after he tried to choke the officer as an angry mob demanded the assailant's death outside the jail. Winchester Inn Sold for redevelopment in Winchester
The Winchester Inn property in the western suburbs was sold to a new corporation by James B. Russell and heirs of the late Mayor Holmes Conrad. The plan is to develop the site into a major residential district with an avenue through the 1400 by 462 foot lot, underground utilities, and extensive paving. The hotel will be dismantled and sold for materials, and the town anticipates the project will create many jobs this winter.

Horse in Road Hit by Machine Near Winchester
Edward Patterson of New York City and Fred Forney of Winchester were seriously injured when a horse strayed onto the Martinsburg pike three miles from Winchester. Their motorcycle struck the horse, tossing them into the road. Patterson suffered a fractured nose and severe cuts while Forney had minor injuries.
