In the central highlands U.S. forces of the 1st Cavalry Division engaged a large North Vietnamese unit at grenade range. U.S. command reported 102 enemy killed in the clash.
The Supreme Court stayed a November ruling barring the Georgia Legislature from choosing between Maddox and Callaway. The stay extends to a December 5 hearing as Fortson appeals. The move preserves the current situation amid legal challenges and write-in votes.
Local notes include record low temperatures 23 25 and 26 degrees across dates this fall. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court in Richmond said the money must be returned to the county treasurer. Justices Black and Stewart signaled interest in arguments on the board’s appeal.

A 7 am blaze on Apple Pie Ridge Road near White Hall damaged a one story brick veneer home, burning a bedroom and hallway and causing heat and smoke damage. Neighbors aided resident Mrs Longerbeam who escaped via a bedroom window. Cause under investigation. Berryville also saw a house fire on S Church St with kitchen and rear damage and smoke throughout. no cause yet.
Winchester firemen responded to a chimney fire at Ted's News Stand 39 S Louden St Saturday at 10 50 p m. No damage occurred according to Fire Inspector William Gochenour. Smoldering soot in an old fireplace required cleanup before the unit could depart.
State police report the season's first snow beginning early today in Southwest Virginia with heavy falls in Smyth Russell and Tazewell counties. Rain mixed with sleet observed in Scott and Washington counties while other areas remain cloudy and snow free.
Romuald Sicinski, 38, rented a rowboat at Muscoot Reservoir and killed five swans the pen, cob, and three cygnets. Police say he was charged with violating the Federal Migratory Bird Act and New York conservation law after claiming ignorance of the law.

Paris AP reports insurgents seized the Togo radio station early today as President Nicolas Grunitzky vowed energetic measures to end the disorder. He said he has likely regained the upper hand in civil disturbances amid calls for his resignation. Reports placed clashes around the presidential palace with thousands of demonstrators in Cotonou and Lome as tensions mounted.

The Supreme Court refused to review the Fourth Circuit ruling that overturned the murder conviction and death sentence of Jay R. Timmons in the killing of Mrs. Ann Bannon in her Norfolk Virginia home. The fourth circuit decision was appealed by Virginia Attorney General Robert Y. Button.
