Palace Theater Opens in Winchester With Fire Damage
The Palace Theater in Winchester, heavily damaged by fire, opened on October 15 1931 with a three show program featuring Honor Among Lovers a Paramount film with Claudette Colbert and Frederick March plus Mamma Loves Papa Hot Time in the Old Town and Sharks and Swordfish. Owner Herman H Hable stated all materials were locally sourced and workers were Winchester residents helping unemployment relief. The steelwork contract worth three million pounds went to Snapp's Foundry with Carson Diettra as foreman. The project began around July 1 1931.

Fire destroys Palace Theater in Winchester blaze
A morning fire in downtown Winchester engulfed the Palace Theater, fuel oil tanks rupturing fed the flames from basement to roof. Fire Chief Bernie Groves ordered the final cut of the front wall at 10 am as 80 firefighters battled two hoses, aerial ladders, and trucks. The interior remained eerily quiet while the facade collapsed and the marquee wreckage tumbled onto the street.
