Apollo 12 astronauts Charles Conrad Jr and Alan Bean plan a science oriented first moon walk starting at 6 02 a m EST. They will deploy a color TV camera and monitor solar particles while collecting rock and soil samples and setting up instruments for the nuclear generator.
The Winchester-Frederick County Jaycees will sponsor a December 3 debate on merger with eight members named by each side. Opponents are Lynn Comer Gene Dicks Leonard Ellis and Robert Luttrell while pro merger members include Dr Samuel N Whitacre Rev John A Baden and James Fleming. A moderator will guide the session at James Wood High School auditorium. The public is urged to submit questions. Robert Appell of Charles Town West Virginia won a portable TV during Downtown Days at Sears.
Joseph Patrick Kennedy, patriarch of the Kennedy political dynasty, died at 81 after an eight year decline. A financier and longtime ambassador, he had been partially paralyzed by a 1961 stroke and weakened by a heart attack in recent days. He died at the Cape Cod compound as Rose Kennedy and other family members were present.
State Police seek three young men after a Frederick County grocery heist at Bob's Cash Grocery on Rt. 7. They threatened attendant Nat Collis, grabbed about $215 plus $30 from his wallet and a six pack of beer, and fled in a small black Valiant or Buick with Virginia plates A8 toward Berryville.
Saigon says South Vietnamese forces killed 273 North Vietnamese in two battles near Bu Prang and Duc Lao in the central highlands as U S artillery and planes did most of the killing. The heaviest clash near Bu Prang produced 243 enemy deaths, while South Vietnamese casualties were reported as 11 wounded.

On opening day three area hunters were injured in separate accidents. John Jenkins, 35, of Strasburg, was struck by a high powered rifle on North Mountain and remained in critical condition. Gary Adkins of Manassas was hit in the shoulder by a ricochet during target shooting near the Woodstock reservoir and released from Warren Memorial Hospital. An eleven year old boy was wounded in the leg when his father discharged a gun outside Woodstock while removing a clip from a .270 rifle. he was admitted to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
West Virginia ranked 18th with an 8 1 record accepts a Dec 30 Peach Bowl game in Atlanta against South Carolina 6 3. The Mountaineers lost only to Penn State and finish the season with Syracuse. Jim Carlen is the WVU coach, a former Bobby Dodd Georgia Tech assistant.
