Adlai E. Stevenson visited the State Department to consult with Secretary Dulles on Eisenhower's plan to revitalize NATO. He said he would help where he agrees and act as a consultant, not to head policy drafting, while meeting Eisenhower later in Augusta, Georgia.
President Eisenhower tells Adlai Stevenson he can be of real help in building a stronger North Atlantic Alliance. The White House released Eisenhower’s letter thanking Stevenson for agreeing to advise on NATO Council preparations in Paris. The two leaders planned further conferences as Dulles coordinates plans amid ties with France over Tunisia arms shipments.
Diplomatic sources in New York say a compromise plan expands the U.N. disarmament commission from 10 to 14 members to satisfy India and neutral countries. The move aims to avert a Western-Soviet split and is to be considered by the 82 nation General Assembly tomorrow.
A wintry storm swept the Midwest with heavy snow from northern Oklahoma to Wisconsin causing school closures as buses could not run. Robert Combs, 47, of Lebanon Church, died after a 30.30 bullet struck his abdomen during a Shenandoah County hunt near Marlboro. A Shenandoah County boy, about 11, fired from 100 to 150 feet away after hearing a rustle. Combs left a wife Virginia. he lived on the Dave Glaize Farm. The body lies at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg. funeral plans pending.
November 29 is set for a fundraising drive for a Northern Virginia rehabilitation center for physically handicapped persons. The goal is 12 000 dollars, with 100 workers led by Mrs Bennett and Mrs Barr visiting homes to solicit contributions. The center would serve Winchester Frederick and Clarke Counties and open in late 1958 offering medical services therapy education counseling and job placement.
Charles Austin of Boyce badly injured when his tractor was struck by a train at Kennerly Crossing near White Post. He was reported in fair condition this morning at Memorial Hospital with head and possible internal injuries.
