Chicago officials including Walker Hines plan a late day meeting with seven regional directors to consider a nationwide freight embargo to conserve dwindling coal. If approved, an immediate order could cut passenger service by about 40 percent and shut nonessential industries, risking widespread unemployment.
Bloomington Illinois November 18. Wartime prohibition remains in force per ruling by Judge Fitzhenry of the United States District Court. The decision followed a case brought by a Peoria distilling company.
The National Woman's Christian Temperance Union maintains an education focused stance on tobacco and rejects a legislative campaign. Delegates note the yesterday vote against anti tobacco legislation does not weaken the broader war on nicotine. In Washington President Wilson was wheeled to the south lawn during a cabinet meeting led by Secretary Lansing.
