Garland R. Quarles announces Handley band will travel to Vinton on Saturday to perform as the group competes for the quarter state championship of Group Ic against the William Byrd Terriers. About 60 band members will be transported by two buses as the event unfolds.
A Dollar Booster club to fund Handley band travel to Vinton was announced by William N. Battaile Robert F. Manuel and John H. Seal. They require $200 in voluntary gifts with contributions mailed to Winchester P. O. Box. They hope to raise the funds by Friday.
Leaders accompany the band and faculty as buses leave at 7 30 a m for the Thanksgiving Day game in Vinton. Director Gylen Strance says the group has little time for new routines and will spell W B for William Byrd high school with similar maneuvers to Staunton two weeks earlier. A large delegation of Winchester football fans is expected for Handley’s first postseason title game.
Secretary of Defense Forrestal plans to fly to Key West tomorrow to dine with President Truman at the southern White House on the naval submarine base. Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross confirmed Forrestal will be a guest of the president. The two spoke by long distance this morning and the invitation followed Forrestal’s request to see the president.
County Superintendent Leslie D. Kline says a Friday 1 30 p m meeting will begin work on the upcoming budget with the major issue how to enlarge school facilities to handle rising enrolment. He reports most buildings are crowded with some rooms at 55 pupils.

Both sides stood firm with Berlin status unchanged and talks deferred pending blockade relief.
Two boys die in a tunnel cave in a clay bank near a highway road cut. Victims are John Whalen age 12 and Francis X O Donnell. Rescue workers freed the bodies after a lengthy effort and artificial respiration. Their aunt Mrs Nancy Dennis and Sgt Floyd Dennis led the search.
